Position Title: Data Scientist Location: Remote Hiring Range: This position's salary hiring range is anticipated to be $85,000 - $95,000 depending on experience, plus great benefits! Interviews will occur weekly until the position is filled. Position Summary: The Data Scientist is responsible for turning shelter and community data into practical strategy for internal program initiatives, segments of animal shelters, and the industry at large. They also help the organization clearly communicate data trends and quantified impact to a variety of external audiences. This work directly supports the primary function of the team of helping Best Friends Animal Society increase the number of no-kill shelters and reduce the number of animals needlessly dying in shelters nationwide through applied data science and program evaluation. Duties and Responsibilities: * Use shelter and community data to aide in lifesaving by identifying deficits and opportunities * Create timely and meaningful reports, analyses, forecasts, etc. to fulfill organizational planning, strategy, and measurement needs * Work with leadership to identify gaps in data collection, inconsistencies, and imperfections across various internal programs and propose solutions to best measure and improve lifesaving efficiency * Collaborate with the data engineering team to help build our data ecosystem necessary for the innovations that will reach our lifesaving goals * Partner with data visualization specialists to make relevant data and insights accessible via dashboards and other visualization modalities Skills and Experience: * Bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, a related field, or equivalent experience * 2+ years of professional experience in quantitative analysis, predictive modeling, data science, and machine learning * Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills * Ability to turn analysis into directly actionable insights and explain using simple language to diverse audiences * Proficiency with languages such as Python, R, or SQL, Snowflake, data visualization tools, and Microsoft Office suite preferred * Experience with the animal welfare movement and understanding of animal sheltering data is a plus Physical Requirements: * Able to work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion * Ability to travel as required, anticipated less than 10%.
