Project/Unit Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Systems Integration Division (SID) supports systems integration, system design, and product development projects for the Department of War (DoW) systems. SID research military systems specializing in avionics, electronic warfare, autonomous systems, intelligence systems, tactical communication/datalink systems; and live, virtual, constructive training solutions. The SID team's engineering roles include Systems Engineering, Algorithm Engineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded Software Engineering.


Job Purpose

Lead multiple sponsored research projects. Manage Branch (7-15 FTE) administrative activities including hiring, appraisals and sponsored project success.

This Branch Head position comes with a Technical Working Title of Avionics Engineer. The Avionics Engineer defines and designs military avionic systems and systems-of-systems. Specifically, the Avionics Engineer develops integrated system-level designs, and hardware and software subsystems designs. The Avionics Engineer also provides expertise and technical leadership to programs and sponsors to achieve overall goals through the full development life cycle (i.e., requirements development to final delivery). Tools and methodologies used by the Avionics Engineer includes Model Based System Engineering, laboratory analysis hardware, software development environments, and Agile methodologies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Recognized SME in technical domain. Lead and/or contribute to white papers and proposals.
  • Seek out and respond to opportunities for new research.
  • Support presentations and travel to support new business development.
  • Ensure that the branch is continuing to pursue new and novel research efforts through judicious use of internal R&D funding.
  • Lead branch hiring activities including development of position vacancy announcements, resume reviews, interviews and onboarding.
  • Determine branch hiring needs.
  • Lead role on manpower planning for branch personnel.
  • Conduct staff appraisals.
  • Support Monthly Project Status Review meetings.
  • Coordinate with division leadership as required.
  • Lead branch hiring activities including development of position vacancy announcements, resume reviews, interviews and onboarding.
  • Determine branch hiring needs.
  • Lead role on manpower planning for branch personnel.
  • Conduct staff appraisals.
  • Support Monthly Project Status Review meetings. Coordinate with division leadership as required.


Avionics:



  • Lead the capture of multiple new research programs and maintain existing research.
  • Define business unit technical vision and develop common cutting-edge technical approaches across business unit projects.
  • Consult and mentor internal product leads and intervene in underperforming projects to ensure objectives are met.
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into common architectures for systems of high complexity.
  • Review technical reports and specifications detailing product or system attributes.
  • Lead large project tasks and/or programs and provide technical status and plans to Project Director.
  • Serve as a resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for avionics engineering tools and technologies.
  • Serve as primary author to whitepapers and proposals.
  • Provide significant technical impact on sponsor base and gain trust in community.
  • Contribute to overall community's knowledge through publishing, presenting, and participating in national societies and symposia.
  • Lead Organizational Strategy development in Avionics Engineering domain


Additional Responsibilities

The Systems Integration Engineering Branch (SIEB) chief is expected to execute the follow primary management responsibilities:



  • Mentor engineers on team.
  • Develop training plans for team members.
  • Engage with current and potential customer.
  • Capture new opportunities for research.
  • Perform project management activities and project oversight.
  • Perform research in the development and integration of Electronic Warfare and Avionic systems.
  • Develop proposals for new research.
  • Contribute to division strategy.

    In addition to management duties, the individual will provide technical inputs and perform as an individual contributor/project leader on sponsored research.


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Leading of small teams (5-10) of engineers.
  • Experience designing/developing complex, software-intensive, military or avionics systems using system engineering processes and methodologies.
  • Experience with Aircraft Avionic Systems.
  • Experience leading project development teams.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • 9 years of relevant experience, post degree.
  • Experience with Open Systems such as: Modular Open System Approach (MOSA), Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE), Open Mission Systems (OMS), or similar.
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
  • Experience with Data Link Systems and Integration.


Travel Requirements

  • 10% - 25% travel.


Education and Length of Experience

  • 9-14 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or any technical degree.
  • 7-12 years of related experience with a Masters' degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or any technical degree.
  • 4-9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or any technical degree.


U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.


Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
