Scientist III - Non-Viral CAR-T/Nanomedicine

Genentech
United States, California, San Diego
Feb 03, 2026
The Position

A healthier future. It's what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That's what makes us Genentech!

The Opportunity

Genentech San Diego's Department of Genetic Medicine Technology is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Scientist III to join the Nanotechnology Platform Group. This role is pivotal in accelerating our internal programs. The successful candidate will possess expertise in molecular biology and gene delivery, with hands-on experience in the design, manipulation, and functional assessment of nucleic acids delivered via lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for T-cell engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute complex functional T-cell assays (in vitro cytotoxicity, proliferation, and cytokine profiling).

  • Develop and run advanced, multi-parameter flow cytometry panels for rigorous analysis of T-cell phenotype, viability, and CAR or reporter protein expression levels.

  • Execute molecular biology techniques including cloning, PCR/qPCR/ddPCR, sequencing analysis, in addition to routine examination of protein expression.

  • Design, clone, and validate novel mRNA and plasmid DNA payloads optimized for maximal transient or stable expression in T cells, in vivo.

  • Contribute to the development of intellectual property around novel nucleic acid delivery platforms.

  • Execute LNP preparation and characterization workflows for both mRNA and pDNA payloads.

  • Plan and execute in vivo studies in relevant mouse models to assess efficacy, persistence, and biodistribution of LNP-delivered constructs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications (must-haves)

  • M.S. in Molecular Biology, Immunology, Bioengineering, or pharmaceutical science with 6+ years of industry experience or Ph.D. with 0-2 years relevant experience in academic or industry setting.

  • T-Cell Experience: Extensive experience with isolation, culture, expansion, and functional assessment of primary human and murine T-cells.

  • Flow Cytometry Mastery: Proven hands-on experience in panel design and advanced data analysis (e.g., FlowJo).

  • Molecular Biology: Fluency in molecular cloning, sequence analysis, DNA/RNA manipulation, and methods to assess protein expression (e.g. western blotting).

Preferred/Growth Skills

  • Prior experience in designing and executing antibody optimization, expression, and purification is preferred but not required
