GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Cardiovascular Technologist III is a Cardiovascular Technologist II with extensive knowledge and training in one or more of the following areas: cardiac procedures and processes; vascular procedures and processes; electrophysiology procedures and processes. The Cardiovascular Technologist III demonstrates in-depth knowledge and understanding of their area of expertise including patient preparation, equipment operation and support, maintaining equipment inventory and acting as a super-user in training and troubleshooting equipment software and problems. Provides education for patient/families and other staff members as needed.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

2. *Must meet the principal job functions of at least one sub-specialty area identified below:

a. Endovascular

* Competently operates all equipment and support systems within scope of practice.

* Demonstrates competency in the use of vascular equipment.

* Operates XRAY system and troubleshoots problems within the system.

* Sets up procedural room and equipment.

* Uses recording screens and analyzes recorded angios.

* Demonstrates competency in the use of catheters and vascular procedures.

* Acts as system super-user and engages in equipment troubleshooting interventions.

* Prepares patients for procedures.

* Reads and interprets angiography; capably utilizes tools on XRAY system (i.e., measuring).

* Acts as lead scrubber in aortic stent grafts and carotid stenting.

* Scrubs peripheral diagnostic and interventional procedures and new, state-of-the-art devices that are utilized by the department/physician (i.e., EKOS, Laser, Jetstream, Diamondback).

* Assists with scrubbing a surgical cut down until backup assistance arrives from OR.

* Floats to OR and West campus to assist with scrubbing endovascular types of procedures when needed.

CREDENTIALING REQUIRED: Certification in Vascular-Interventional Radiology through ARRT or certification through Cardiovascular Credentialing International for Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) required.

b. Cardiac

* Functions as the super-user of the hemodynamic system and lead educator for the system; works closely with CPACS team to implement upgrades and maintain support for the system.

* Involved in patient door-to-balloon time initiatives and acts as primary liaison between department and Lincoln Fire & Rescue and other EMS units.

* Acts as lead technologist in review of VAD and TAVR right heart workups.

* Participates in VAD group when requested.

* Works with physicians to maintain right heart procedures and remains abreast of best practice guidelines.

* Competently operates all equipment and support systems within scope of practice.

* Demonstrates competency in the use of cardiac equipment.

* Sets up procedural room and equipment.

* Uses recording screens and analyzes recorded angios.

* Demonstrates competency in the use of catheters and cardiac procedures.

* Develops skills and engages in equipment troubleshooting interventions.

* Prepares patients for procedures.

* Reads and interprets angiography; capably utilizes tools on XRAY system (i.e., measuring).

* Acts as primary scrubber in complex cases such as Impellas and Tandem Heart procedures.

* Adept in the operation of all state-of-the-art cardiac devices utilized by the department/physician (i.e., FFR, IVUS, Lucas device); functions as super-user with devices and provides education to others in the use of these devices.

* Performs all right heart measurements and calculations.

CREDENTIALING REQUIRED: Registration as Cardiac Invasive Specialist (RCIS) required.

c. Electrophysiology

* Demonstrates competencies in the use of electrophysiology equipment.

* Sets up equipment (i.e., recorder, stimulator, RF Generator).

* Uses recording screens and analyzes data recorded.

* Uses stimulator and stimulates as requested by physician.

* Demonstrates competencies in the use of catheters.

* Demonstrates competencies in the use of RF generator and mapping system.

* Develops and engages in troubleshooting skills.

* Prepares patients for procedures.

* Reads and interprets intracardiac signals and timing sequence.

* Demonstrates competencies in cardiac device rhythm management.

* Demonstrates competencies in the use of pacemakers including selection criteria, lead-generator compatibility, pacemaker features and programmable values.

* Reprograms and analyzes pacemaker functions.

* Troubleshoots pacemaker programming issues.

* Demonstrates competencies in ICD devices including selection criteria, ICD features and programmability.

* Uses programmer for implanting, reprogramming and retrieving/analyzing data.

CREDENTIALING REQUIRED: Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) or International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) Certified Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS) or IBHRE Certified Electrophysiology Specialist CEPS) certification required.

3. *Performs therapeutic interventions, and consistent with cath lab procedures, demonstrates competencies with consideration given to risk management and infection control procedures.

4. *Assembles, operates and troubleshoots equipment needed for various procedures in the Invasive Cardiology Lab; takes appropriate action where needed.

5. *Functions in the lead scrub role by preparing, organizing and anticipating needed instruments, supplies and equipment for safe patient care and operative procedure and other activities as directed by provider.

6. *Acts as lead technologist in the procedure area/room and direct assisting staff.

7. *Demonstrates ongoing active involvement in quality/process improvement within the department and/or completes management-approved education presentation annually; submits written report of activity to manager at annual performance appraisal meeting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required to have at least one (1) of the following:

  • Associates degree in Cardiovascular Technology or allied health field of study;
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT);
  • Minimum of three (3) years on-the-job training in invasive cardiology in association with Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) certification.


Bachelor's degree preferred. Demonstrates competency in at least one sub-specialty area as determined by Manager. Minimum of three (3) years cath lab experience required.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification and Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
