Job Summary


Employment Duration: 3 months

The Sterile Processing Technician II is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies throughout the medical center. This role supports safe, efficient surgical operations by preparing case carts, maintaining sterile inventory, operating sterilization equipment, and ensuring compliance with professional standards. The technician also serves as a resource and support for other Sterile Processing staff.

This position requires flexibility to work across multiple medical center locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, inspect, and package operating room, clinic, endoscopic, and house instrument sets in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, professional standards, and electronic count sheets

  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and sterility prior to use
  • Decontaminate surgical instruments using approved protocols, disinfectants, and equipment
  • Disassemble, clean, sort, and process reusable instrumentation from multiple surgical specialties
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment, ensuring proper loading, cycle selection, monitoring, and documentation
  • Verify sterilization parameters are met prior to release of processed items
  • Prepare accurate surgical case carts using OR preference cards for scheduled and emergent cases
  • Coordinate with operating room staff to ensure timely delivery of supplies and instruments
  • Maintain sterile inventory through stock rotation, par level management, and quality assurance practices
  • Document sterilization, disinfection, and material distribution activities using electronic systems
  • Assist and support other Sterile Processing Technicians; serve as a resource for new and agency staff
  • Maintain effective communication with internal departments to ensure efficient workflow

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST or CSPDT/CBSPD)
  • Knowledge of all core sterile processing functions, including:
    • Decontamination
    • Inspection, assembly, and packaging
    • Sterilization of medical devices
    • Quality control and recordkeeping
    • Distribution of sterile products
    • Case cart preparation and quality assurance
  • Ability to operate sterilizers, washers, and ultrasonic cleaning equipment
  • Basic computer proficiency, including use of Windows-based systems
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and standard infection prevention practices
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift and move trays and equipment up to 50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications


  • Minimum of one year of prior experience as a Sterile Processing Technician

License/Certification


  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST or CSPDT/CBSPD)
