Job Summary

Duration: 6 months

Note: Appointment is variable up to 30 hours per week.

Under the supervision of the IRB Manager, the IRB Coordinator supports the review and oversight of human subjects research by screening and managing IRB submissions. The Coordinator conducts expedited and exempt reviews, ensures regulatory compliance, and serves as a key point of contact between investigators and the IRB. Depending on experience and assignment, the Coordinator may act as a designated IRB reviewer with authority to approve research or require modifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Screen initial, modification, and continuing review applications for expedited IRB review or exempt determinations

  • Review submissions for completeness, appropriate level of review, and compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines

  • Serve as a designated IRB reviewer, when assigned, with authority to approve research or require changes

  • Return applications with required stipulations when revisions are needed

  • Independently review submissions or assign completed applications to IRB chairs and committee members for formal review

  • Analyze and evaluate IRB committee decisions to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as institutional policies and procedures

  • Take corrective action when IRB decisions or processes are identified as non-compliant

  • Draft formal correspondence to investigators based on committee decisions and independent protocol analysis

  • Review investigator responses and determine next steps, including:

    • Requesting additional information

    • Completing the review

    • Forwarding responses to IRB committee members for further consideration

  • Advise investigators and IRB members on regulatory requirements and limitations affecting committee decisions

  • Assist with the development and improvement of IRB review systems and procedures

  • Educate investigators and IRB members on review processes and regulatory expectations

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
