What you'll do

The Global IT Infrastructure team provides cloud infrastructure used by Viasat engineers to develop and deliver our diverse portfolio of products. As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will work closely with other technical fields to design, develop, and deliver automation and reusable cloud solutions that enable teams at Viasat to scale quickly, and operate securely and efficiently. You will set guidelines and team standards, as well as deliver complex cloud infrastructure projects. Your contributions to this team will have a wide-reaching impact on how Viasat develops and delivers our products and services. The ideal candidate will bring an expert background in cloud engineering, CI/CD, and the desire to expand their technical and leadership skills by working with a diverse set of technologies and engineers.


The day-to-day

  • Build: Ship reusable Terraform modules, Ansible roles, and GitHub Actions workflows adopted by multiple teams each quarter, with versioning and tests
  • Automate: Use work tracking data to target high-effort work that can be made more efficient through automation. Set a return on investment goal for each project and report time saved and ticket reduction after launch.
  • Enable: Write task-focused documents and run enablement sessions. Participate in resolving blocking issues for services the team operates. Mentor and train team members with acquired skills and knowledge to improve their skills in cloud engineering, CI/CD, and automation
  • Standardize: Maintain reference architectures and guardrails for secure infrastructure across major cloud providers. Set standards and procedures for Cloud Engineering; drive high-quality code design across the team and serve as lead peer review engineer
  • Integrate: Incorporate industry standard automation and CI/CD practices into infrastructure to drive efficiency and standardization
  • Drive: Work on and lead projects of complex scope to deliver cloud infrastructure solutions. Engage other teams and partners to analyze and define problems to be solved. Drive value by evaluating areas for improvement and adapting complex techniques and evaluation criteria to determine appropriate methods

What you'll need

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent
  • 7+ years delivering cloud platform capabilities to a major public cloud provider
  • 3+ years mentoring and leading team members
  • Expert understanding of public cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and automation.
  • Experience leading the design and delivery of solutions based on defined outcomes while incorporating stakeholder feedback throughout
  • Expert Terraform (or other IaC) skills and experience with at least one CI system
  • Substantial experience with Kubernetes: image and container build, Helm or Kustomize, managing applications, and employing related technologies such as Istio, CNI, etc.
  • Cloud networking experience: CIDR, routing, security groups/NSGs, DDI
  • Experienced with Linux and fluent in at least one scripting language
  • Expert cloud infrastructure design and problem-solving skills
  • Clear written communication and documentation; experience engaging customers and stakeholders and discussing
  • technical solutions with all levels of technical background
  • Experience working with the Agile/Scrum methodology, defining tasks, and acceptance criteria
  • Technical understanding of virtualization and hybrid infrastructure
  • US Citizenship required
  • Available to travel up to 10%

  • Secrets management at scale

  • Exposure to GitOps with ArgoCD
  • One or more of Python, TypeScript, Go

Salary range

$153,000.00 - $241,000.00 / annually.
For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $189,500.00- $284,500.00/ annually
