We're looking for a Software Developer to help build and maintain a Node.js-based web application that serves as a core data source for business-critical functions. You'll work across both backend and frontend web development, creating reliable services and responsive user experiences.

This is a contract to hire opportunity that offers a hybrid work schedule and is located in the Columbus, OH area.

During development downtime, you'll also contribute to data engineering tasks - building data pipelines, integrations, and internal automation tools.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys full-stack web development, values clean and maintainable systems, and is comfortable collaborating directly with stakeholders to shape software solutions. You should also be comfortable working in a startup environment, where priorities evolve, ownership is shared, and rapid problem-solving is part of daily work.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain backend services for a Node.js web application
  • Develop and maintain frontend web interfaces
  • Implement low-latency AJAX and asynchronous client-server workflows
  • Design and work with databases, schemas, and queries
  • Work with SQL Server, Oracle SQL, and Cosmos DB (NoSQL) data systems
  • Build and maintain data pipelines, integrations, RPA bots, and internal data tools
  • Automate data processing and reporting tasks
  • Write clean, testable, well-documented code
  • Participate in project planning, task estimation, and progress tracking
  • Consult with users and stakeholders to gather requirements and refine features
  • Troubleshoot and support production systems
  • Adapt to shifting priorities and contribute where needed in a growing startup environment

Required Qualifications
  • Strong experience with Node.js, Express, and JavaScript
  • Ability to write, maintain, and debug vanilla JavaScript without the use of frameworks or libraries
  • Experience building and consuming backend web services and APIs
  • Experience with frontend web development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Bootstrap (preferably Bootstrap 5)
  • Familiarity building and optimizing low-latency AJAX and asynchronous workflows
  • Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases
  • Comfortable using Git-based version control and CI/CD pipelines (preferably Azure DevOps)
  • Ability to communicate with non-technical users to gather requirements
  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving, evolving startup environment

Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (preferably Azure)
  • Familiarity with cloud-based microservices
  • Experience building internal tools or automation scripts
  • Experience with data engineering or ETL pipelines
  • Exposure to analytics or reporting systems

  • the individual's skill sets, experience and training;
  • licensure and certification requirements;
  • office location and other geographic considerations;

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco by Highspring believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
