Job Description

At IPS, we are global leaders in developing innovative solutions for the consulting, architecture, engineering, project controls, procurement, construction management, and CQV of technically complex facilities, primarily in the life sciences industry. We are looking for a dedicated Senior Process Automation Engineer to join our talented team at our office in Emeryville, California

In this role, you will lead and perform all aspects of Process Automation work and contribute to department initiatives. You will also consult with clients to develop the scope of the Automation solutions needed for their projects from Process Control Systems (PCS) to Environmental Monitoring Systems (EMS), and how they will interact with the Building Automation System (BAS) and other systems, such as Manufacturing Execution Systems, Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Laboratory Information Systems, etc.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist the client in strategic evaluations to develop concepts supported by engineering studies for expanding, improving, or automating existing facilities.

  • Work with Project Management to develop the work plan to complete the scope of projects in the Concept, Basis of Design, and Detailed Design phases.
  • Delegate tasks to your team of engineers, produce your scope of deliverables, and review all work product for your projects.
  • Contribute to the development of junior engineers by reviewing their work and mentoring their education in Process Automation.
  • Working with clients, other IPS disciplines, and vendors to develop complete Automation solutions.

  • Consulting on the proper adoption of the ISA S95 levels to meet the client's needs now and in the future.

  • Coordinates with project managers to determine project scope, complexity, and schedule for project development.

  • Writes the scope of work for process, utilities, and manufacturing controls based on preliminary reviews with the client.

  • Reviewing and advising the client on design decisions and capturing all pertinent decisions in project reports.

  • Actively collaborate with the process design and project teams to support the execution of successful project studies.

  • Manage and delegate tasks to up to 4 project members to meet project scope, schedule, and deadlines.

  • Develop the design and specifications for DCS, PLC, and SCADA-based process control systems for IPS clients and projects.

  • Perform automation-related job functions as assigned, including I/O lists, Instrumentation lists, and the specification of instrumentation and control elements.

  • Support IQ/OQ development and participate in systems analysis, validation, and verification.

  • Work with end users and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to coordinate the application of automation products.

  • Identify, qualify, and collaborate with third-party system integrators as necessary to support project and company business objectives.

  • Manage and delegate tasks to up to 4 project members to meet project scope, schedule, and deadlines.

  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise by developing department standards and improving existing work practices.

  • Progressive ability and aptitude to develop and mentor junior staff members.

  • Identify Automation deliverables per the project scope with the Project Management team.

The salary offered for this role is between $117,000 and $180,000, but the actual salary offered is dependent on experience, skill set, and education.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering - ME/EE/ChemE/Automation/Manufacturing or equivalent.

  • 6+ years of relevant work experience.

  • Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer-aided drafting.

  • Experienced with ISA standards and the interpretation of P&I drawings.

  • 3+ years of experience with industrial process control system, including DCS, PLC, and SCADA-based systems or pharmaceutical process instrumentation.

OR

  • 3 years of experience with Pharmaceutical process instrumentation.

  • Experience with the development of control system network architectures.

  • Experience with the development of cGMP and GAMP automation lifecycle documents.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and presence to deal effectively with senior-level contacts.

  • Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active participation in relevant professional associations.

  • Registered Professional Engineer.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to stand, sit, and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Must possess the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as required.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb ladders as necessary.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, which may include exposure to varying working conditions.
  • Must be able to adhere to strict cleanroom gowning protocol.

Travel

  • This position will require 5-20% travel or as required by the assigned project.
  • You may be assigned to a client site for an extended period.
  • Overnight travel or staying in the city of the Client's location is possible, depending on the assignment.

  • You will visit Client sites and must adhere to stated safety rules.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
  • Must have the ability to travel and commute on a daily or routine basis.

Safety

  • This position is a safety-sensitive position.
  • The employee is designated for field work and attends activities at client sites where they work in construction, process, packaging, manufacturing, research, or other "non-administrative" areas.

All interviews are conducted either in person or virtually, with video required.
