Position Summary

The Medical Assistant (Certified/Credentialed) is responsible for assisting in the daily activities of the Positive Health Solutions clinic operation, performing a variety of clinical and clerical functions in a medical setting. Responsibilities include measuring vital signs and documenting appropriately in the electronic health record, phlebotomy and administering injections as directed by Provider. Assisting with monitoring and scheduling screening exams such as Colonoscopy, Mammogram and Dexa Scans, and other referrals as ordered by Provider.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Reviews orders prior to scheduled lab visits, update orders and send for approval to provider as needed, documents medical visits, report observations during the rooming process. Scan medical records to OSF HIM MS/Solarity.
  • Direct patient care: Works under the direction of physician and nurse supervisor. Escorts patient to the exam room. Takes and records vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, height, weight, pulse and respirations. Assess medication adherence. Reviews medications and allergies. Document reason for visit and screening tests, such as Colonoscopy, Mammogram, Pap Smear for which the patient may be due. Notify provider of any abnormal vital signs observed while rooming Records and administers prefilled vaccines following a provider's orders. Performs phlebotomy. Restock supplies in exam rooms. Monitor supply of clinic stock of nutrition supplements and vitamins. Following OSF guidelines, scan records to HIMMS.
  • Performs in-direct patient care tasks such as the following: Per institutional policy, enters orders into the EHR, following provider orders; requisitions of laboratory tests and procedures, such as medicines, laboratory, and radiology. Dispatches messages to other departments and makes appointments for patients requiring services in other departments or healthcare facilities, as requested by the medical staff. Communicate with patients regarding scheduling for screening. Mammograms, Dexa Scans and Colonoscopies as referred by provider, also provides necessary follow up work, such as verifying that-patient attended scheduled appointment. Receives new supplies from supply source and manages inventories, checks supplies delivered against request for shortages and breakage; records errors or damages detected; places items in proper storage location in supply room; stocks examining rooms, insuring that appropriate medications and supplies are available at all times. Obtains ore-authorizations and referrals.
  • Performs clerical duties such as the following: Maintains patient files, medical records, treatment records, and laboratory results; completes patient EHR as prescribed by providers. Compiles periodic statistical reports from records and other data, such as clinic attendance, the number of patients seen by each provider, and the discharge service analysis.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • High school graduation or equivalent
    • Possession of a current/valid medical assistant certification by an approved certifying board as defined by the employing institution
    Preferred Qualifications

    Phlebotomy training or certification preferred.

    Experience working with the G8F Epic EMR preferred.

    Skill in performing venipuncture preferred.
    Skill in operating diagnostic
    equipment such as diabetes monitoring devices and urinalysis equipment preferred.

    Ability to maintain patient and family confidentially preferred
