The role - what you'll do

Barr is looking for a mid-level or senior-level cultural resources specialist to lead archaeology field teams and manage project tasks for our expanding cultural resource management practice in the western and central United States. In this role, you will oversee fieldwork on various project sites, coordinate and help ensure the timely and high-quality completion of tasks, and develop reports-including due diligence reviews and archaeological technical reports. You will also assist with project proposals and budgets; collaborate closely with clients, regulatory personnel, and multidisciplinary internal teams; and contribute to a positive and inclusive team culture.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Fieldwork: lead and manage archaeology field teams on various project sites throughout Barr's market area.

  • Reporting: develop reports required for project approvals and conduct due diligence reviews for CRM projects, including sections of local, state, federal, and tribal archaeological technical reports.

  • Task management: oversee and coordinate project tasks to help ensure timely and high-quality delivery that meet client and agency expectations.

  • Permitting: assist with permit applications and maintenance (end-of-year reporting).

  • Collaboration: build and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulatory personnel, and internal teams. Work across disciplines to align technical approaches with client goals while contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based at Barr's offices located in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Farmington, New Mexico; Durango, Colorado; Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah; or Bismarck, North Dakota.

  • Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project and team needs (including up to 70% travel); needs will vary seasonally and over time.

  • Work environment: applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction, industrial, and remote work sites. Some work locations may also feature steep slopes and dense vegetation.An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required; safety training will be provided.Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: master's degree in industrial archaeology, archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, ethnography, or a related field or equivalent education and experience.

  • Registered Professional Archaeologist.

  • Experience:

    • 5 or more years of experience in cultural resources management.

    • 2 or more years of experience leading and supporting crews on Section 106-related field projects.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of Section 106, the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and state regulations concerning cultural and natural resources management throughout the western and central United States.

    • Experience with literature reviews, field surveys, National Register evaluations, data recovery investigations, construction monitoring, scheduling, budgeting, and report preparation.

  • Permitting: ability to obtain required permits to perform archaeological and/or architectural surveys on federal, state, tribal, local, and public land.

  • Software: experience using MS Office suite (Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook), Field Maps, and cultural resource databases.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Work authorization: must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Proficient in ArcGIS Pro.

  • Knowledge of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and state regulations concerning natural resources management throughout the western and central United States.

  • Current archaeological permits held in the Intermountain West, Southwest, Great Plains, or Midwest.

  • Proven business development skills (client engagement, proposal writing).

Compensation: Anticipated range of $75,000-$95,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
