The Safety Programs and Training Instructional Designer designs, develops, and evaluates learning solutions that protect people, prevent incidents, and reduce organizational risk. This role plays a critical part in strengthening safety performance and ensuring compliance with regulatory, contractual, and internal safety requirements.

Using proven instructional design methodologies and a solid understanding of workplace hazards, OSHA standards, emergency response, and risk-mitigation principles, the Safety Instructional Designer translates safety requirements into clear, engaging, and behavior-based training that supports safe decision-making in real-world, high-risk operational environments.

This role collaborates closely with Safety leaders, operational leaders, and cross-functional partners to create scenario-driven learning experiences that reinforce safe work practices, prepare employees to respond effectively during incidents and emergencies, and support a proactive, accountable safety culture.

The Safety Instructional Designer contributes to the continuous improvement of safety programs by evaluating training effectiveness, analyzing performance and safety data, and enhancing learning materials that drive measurable outcomes-such as incident reduction, regulatory readiness, and sustained safe behaviors. The role also supports new safety procedures, system rollouts, and enterprise-wide safety initiatives.

Responsibilities

Main responsibilities:

    Design and Develop Learning Solutions: Create high-quality learning interventions including instructor-led training (ILT), virtual instructor-led training (vILT), and eLearning modules.
  • Produce Multimedia Training Assets: Develop training materials such as graphics, audio, video, simulations, and animations, with a strong focus on pilot and technical training content.
  • Partner with Cross-Functional Teams: Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs), operational leaders, and cross-department stakeholders to identify training needs and translate them into effective learning solutions.
  • Evaluate and Improve Curriculum: Assess existing training programs for effectiveness, accuracy, and alignment with learning outcomes; recommend and implement enhancements.
  • Oversee Learning Project Development: Manage the end-to-end production lifecycle of learning solutions, ensuring quality, accuracy, and timely delivery.
  • Facilitate sessions with subject matter experts to ensure the accuracy of course content and train-the-trainer classes with facilitators.
  • Practice Own the Moments safety values in all operational processes and procedure.


Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience

  • Three (3)-five (5) years of instructional design experience.
  • Bachelor's required; master's preferred, or equivalent experience in instructional design, safety, or training.
  • Experience with eLearning development tools, particularly Articulate Storyline 360 (Rise and other Articulate 360 tools preferred), Canva, Camtasia and Vyond.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and development methodologies such as ADDIE, ISD, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with multimedia production, including audio, video, animation, and graphic arts design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including scriptwriting for learning content.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple projects and deliverables.

Skills/Competencies

  • Proficiency in eLearning development tools (Articulate 360 suite, multimedia tools, graphic design tools).
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies.
  • Ability to create high-quality instructional materials for instructor-led, virtual, and self-paced learning.
  • SCORM/xAPI publishing
  • Basic HTML/CSS understanding
  • Learning metrics and evaluation (Kirkpatrick, data dashboards, LMS reporting, etc.)
  • Skilled in developing multimedia and technical training content, especially for specialized audiences (e.g., driver/operator, maintenance, OSHA training)
  • Publishing and maintaining courses in the LMS
  • Collaboration: Works effectively with SMEs, cross-functional partners, and operational teams to design and refine training programs.
  • Communication: Clearly conveys complex information through writing, visuals, and verbal communication.
  • Creativity & Innovation: Develops engaging and interactive learning experiences using multimedia and various learning technologies.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensures accuracy, quality, and alignment with learning objectives and organizational standards.
