Job Summary

The Product Engineer is a hands-on engineer who contributes across the product lifecycle, focusing on sustaining and optimizing existing designs while supporting new product introductions. Working under senior engineering guidance, the engineer partners with optomechanical, electronics, and software teams to diagnose issues, implement design enhancements, and ensure robust, manufacturable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key contributor to sustaining engineering initiatives, developing and implementing product design improvements, cost reductions, and process optimizations that enhance product quality, reliability, and manufacturability throughout the lifecycle
  • Apply strong hands-on skills in troubleshooting, prototyping, validation testing, and failure analysis to investigate and resolve mechanical or manufacturing issues, implementing corrective actions as needed
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with optomechanical, electrical, and software teams from product inception through production and support, ensuring cohesive design integration, manufacturability, and performance across the full product lifecycle
  • Create, maintain, and revise detailed mechanical models, drawings, and engineering documentation using SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, ensuring configuration control and compliance with GD&T and ASME Y14.5 standards
  • Perform tolerance analyses, material selection, and DFM/DFA evaluations, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance product performance, simplify assembly, and reduce cost
  • Develop a deep understanding of the terminology, techniques, and tools used in the laser industry, applying these principles to ensure all designs and processes meet applicable safety, regulatory, and quality requirements for high-power laser systems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • 2-4 years of relevant mechanical or product engineering experience, with demonstrated hands-on involvement in the assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical or electromechanical systems
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD and 2D drafting (including GD&T and ASME Y14.5), complemented by a comprehensive understanding of mechanical design principles, including stress analysis, material selection, thermal management, and vibration mitigation
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using SolidWorks PDM for configuration management and revision control
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, injection molding, casting, and additive manufacturing, with an emphasis on design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA)
  • Exposure to optomechanical systems or precision assemblies, with experience collaborating closely with software and electronics teams on integrated product development
  • Basic programming or automation experience using Python or similar tools for test, analysis, or data handling
  • Experience in sustaining or reliability engineering, including root cause and corrective action (RCCA) methodologies
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
