Associate - Adjudicator, Criminal Background Screening

This role will be responsible for adjudicating Criminal Background Screens and performing individualized assessments on complex cases to make a determination on employment eligibility in accordance with procedures, applicable laws, and regulations. The ability to exercise superior judgment is a plus for this role, as is the ability to multi-task, prioritize and effectively problem solve. The performer will be able to research and interpret appropriate legal statutes to aid in the decisioning process. This role will also handle escalated/sensitive inquiries while working in an agile environment. A successful candidate would offer and implement process improvements to drive efficiency, compliance adherence and enhance the candidate and associate experiences.

General Responsibilities:

  • Execution of applicable HR processes & programs

  • Adjudicate background screenings based on criminal, education, and work history

  • Access/update multiple databases/trackers

  • Support compliance changes, updates and initiatives

  • Contact candidates to resolve discrepancies as needed

  • Work with vendor to address minor candidate background issues

Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to follow written policy, use critical thinking/problem solving skills to adjudicate complex cases

  • Possess cognitive flexibility, time management skills, and task initiation

  • Ability to navigate complex and sensitive subject matter in a poised and professional manner

  • Possess a high level of integrity

  • Experience in a role requiring decisioning applications using good judgement

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification

  • At least 1 year of experience adjudicating background investigation results or pre-employment screenings against established guidelines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ year of process management or project management experience

  • 2+ years of risk management experience

  • 2+ years security, law enforcement, legal experience or paralegal experience with either an in-house legal department or a law firm

  • 1+ year of experience in Human Resources

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Richmond, VA: $64,700 - $73,900 for HR Associate

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
