Job Title:

Engineering Lab Manager

Reporting To:

Management, General Engineering

Work Schedule:

Onsite - Buffalo, NY

Our Space Sector is looking for an Engineering Lab Manager to join the Actuation and Avionics FastWorks Team. This hands-on role combines lab stewardship and development inventory ownership with practical test setup, execution, and product support. You'll enable reliable, repeatable testing for qualification, acceptance test, development and integration activities while keeping the lab safe, organized, and well-stocked. You will work independently with minimal supervision and regularly interact with product and project engineers.

In this position you will drive the execution of quick-turn, technically complex actuation and avionics hardware programs. This is a hands-on role that requires technical breadth, practical lab experience, and strong program ownership. You will report to the FastWorks Staff Manager and will have an onsite work schedule in East Aurora, New York.

FastWorks focus areas

  • Support Core Business by enabling fast execution in the development portion of programs
  • Improve processes by testing new approaches and mindsets.
  • Support emerging customers that require flexible, fast engagement.

As an Engineering Lab Manager, you will: Own and maintain the lab space, lab equipment, tools list, conduct inventories, track ownership, and be the keeper of what we own and what is going on.

  • Work across electronic and actuation disciplines in a lab environment including Electro-Hydraulic, Electro-Mechanical, and Electronic control.
  • Set up instruments and run tests (ATP, qualification, development, integration) end-to-end, including fixture development, cabling, hydraulics, power, and data collection.
  • Independently execute hardware testing and document results.
  • Measure electrical parameters using lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, power supplies, and data acquisition systems correctly and safely.
  • Document test procedures, instrument configurations, and results; escalate technical issues to engineers when appropriate.
  • Build and repair equipment such as cable assemblies, harnesses, and breakout boxes to enable agile test execution and development.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness and enforce standards: ensure tools are returned, work areas remain presentable, and safety/organization rules are followed.
  • Manage supplies and consumables: anticipate needs, place orders, and coordinate replacements.
  • Duties will have heavy overlap with Product Engineering and Engineering Technician.
  • Procure basic tools and coordinate purchasing with managers as required.
  • Train and mentor technicians or engineers on lab processes and test setups as needed.

To be considered for the Engineering Lab Manager role, here's what you'll need to bring with you:

  • Associate's/technical degree in EE, ME, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years hands-on experience in an engineering lab or test environment supporting mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems (actuator testing experience preferred).
  • Ability to access U.S. export-controlled information
  • Proven ability to set up, instrument, and execute tests independently (DAQ, oscilloscopes, power supplies, current probes).
  • Able to measure phase currents, voltages, and interpret oscilloscope/data outputs.
  • Practical familiarity with hydraulics, mechanical assembly (torquing), and electromechanical systems.
  • Experience building and verifying cable assemblies and basic wiring harnesses.
  • Comfortable working with medium/high-voltage systems with adherence to safety procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills for inventory management and lab provisioning.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and good judgment for escalating issues.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills to document and share test results and lab status.

A strong candidate with a subset of qualifications above will be considered, reach out to start a conversation.

It'd be great if you also had:

  • Experience with actuator motion testing, power electronics, motor drives, or motion control systems.
  • Familiarity with DAQ/test automation tools (e.g., LabVIEW, NI DAQ), and standard test practices (ATP, qualification).
  • Prior responsibility for lab upkeep, inventory systems, procurement, or tool management.

Working conditions & expectations:

  • Onsite role with moderate physical activity (lifting, moving fixtures, working with hydraulic fluids and electrical equipment).
  • Occasional off-hours tests may be required to support program schedules.
  • You will be responsible for enforcing lab cleanliness and organization and will be the primary point of contact for lab tools and equipment.
  • Close collaboration with design, product, and project engineers in a fast-paced prototyping environment.

Why this role matters

You'll keep our lab running and our tests repeatable - enabling engineers to validate designs quickly and safely. By owning the lab environment and equipment list, you directly increase team throughput and program reliability.
