The mission of the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire, and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. Essential Job Duties
This Assistant/Associate Professor position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the delivery of instruction in parasitology with an emphasis in large animal (Equine and Production Animal) parasites. The position will fulfill diagnostic responsibilities mainly through the teaching hospital, including consultations for external entities. The successful candidate will provide diagnostic and consulting services consistent with the college's emphasis on high-quality care and support of producers in North Carolina.
The candidate will be integral in the development of instruction in parasitology for veterinary students, and a strong interest in teaching is required. Teaching responsibilities will predominantly focus on the training and assessment of preclinical veterinary students, including participation in didactic courses, labs, and elective classes. This position will also include some training of veterinary students and farm animal house officers in the clinical setting.
This position is expected to have some interaction with livestock producers and the swine, poultry, and equine industry. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent research program focused on large animal parasitology and secure extramural funding from federal, state, foundation, and/or industrial sources.
Clinical Service
As requested (consultations, diagnostics, and parasite identifications for internal and external constituents, official parasitology consultant for the Hospital Diagnostic Lab)

Research
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain a productive, externally funded research program in domestic animal parasitology, with preference given to candidates whose work focuses on nematode biology, epidemiology, or anthelmintic resistance.

Didactic Teaching & Mentoring
Formal lectures, curriculum development, small group teaching, and mentoring junior faculty, residents, and students (often integrated with other activities).

Professional/Administrative Service Extension
Departmental, medical school, or hospital committees (e.g., promotions, curriculum, quality improvement), national society leadership, peer review, and administration.
Other Responsibilities
Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • DVM and/or equivalent degree and MS or PhD in large animal parasitology
Other Required Qualifications

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.
  • Strong commitment to excellence in teaching and a strong interest in teaching veterinary students and clinically relevant large animal parasitology research.
  • Ability to network, develop partnerships, and build and maintain relationships with livestock producers and stakeholders in the North Carolina large animal industries.
  • Familiarity with issues involving large animal parasites at local, national, and global levels.
  • Develop an independent research program and engage in collaborative research with members of the Animal Science and College of Veterinary Medicine faculty.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology (Parasitology) or board-eligible
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
  • Eligibility for licensure or faculty certificate to practice veterinary medicine in the State of North Carolina, as well as eligibility for Federal veterinary accreditation
