The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Manager of Instructional Laboratories for the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) is primarily responsible for overseeing the operation and safety of a mechanical engineering teaching laboratory and a mechatronics laboratory, managing the lab staff and student employees, as well as working on various instructional student projects and experiments.

The incumbent will be responsible for organizational, administrative, safety, and financial services related to the management of day-to-day operations of the laboratories, as well as working with faculty on lab courses and instructing students on the operation of laboratory equipment. The incumbent maintains and operates laboratory equipment such as CNC machines, laser cutters, 3D printers, mechanical and electronic instrumentation, computers interfacing with instrumentation and equipment, etc. Daily tasks will include: administrative and instructional support to lab staff and student employees; instructional support to students; experimental support to students, researchers, and PIs; coordinating purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment; and other general administrative duties. The incumbent will interface with student clubs in the design and manufacturing of club projects. The incumbent will also serve on various departmental and university committees regarding undergraduate affairs, lab safety and coordination, and other committees as requested.

Responsibilities



  • 20% -Managing supporting roles in the lab spaces, including staff, super users, and work studies.
  • 20% -Maintaining and operating laboratory equipment and experimental setup,s including CNC machines, laser cutters, 3D printers, mechanical and electronic instrumentation, computers interfacing with instrumentation/equipment, and other tools utilized in the lab spaces.
  • 15%-Providing assistance for students in the design and implementation of research and class projects.
  • 15%-Coordinating lab usage for classes and research; oversee lab organization and storage.
  • 10%-Maintaining laboratory inventories and ordering replacement supplies, as well as coordinating billing for lab materials and approving transactions.
  • 10%- Interfacing with student clubs regarding project design and team logistics.
  • 5%- Serving on committees regarding undergraduate affairs, lab safety and coordination, and other committees as requested.
  • 5%- Performing other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree and or its equivalent experience required, preferably in mechanical engineering.
  • A minimum of 2 years of related experience, or other general experience working in a "hands-on" laboratory environment.
  • Strongly prefer mentoring, management experience, design, rapid prototyping, and CNC fabrication experience.
