Primary Function: Manufacture sodium silicate products working as a member of an empowered team to safely operate, drive improvement, and maintain ownership of the Chicago Silicates Operations department.

Essential functions for Blending Operator role in order to fulfill the Primary Function stated above include:

The intent of the role is to be an active team member working with other Silicate Blender-Certifiers, Stationary Engineers, and Dissolver Operators.

The Blending Operator role is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient operation of processes and equipment to store, transfer, blend, sample, and load silicate products. Role specific functions include:

  • Proficient in operation of the process during Start-up, Run, Idle, Shutdown, and all other process condition steps for all of the tank farm and blending related equipment and operations.

  • Proficient in fluid transfer process (starting/stopping/troubleshooting pumps, opening/closing valves, sampling, etc.)

  • Proficient in dry material handling process (starting/stopping/troubleshooting conveyors, elevators, pneumatic transport, etc.)

  • Communicate with internal and external teams as needed.

  • Facilitate shift change meeting and daily work activities for the operations team to meet target outcomes by planning and distributing work, monitoring progress, and communicating status to the work group and leadership teams for specific day-to-day job assignments.

  • Input daily process performance metrics, document issues and/or solutions, and facilitate daily review with work group, support, and leadership teams.

  • Communicate daily department maintenance needs to the Process Supervisor, Maintenance Coordinator, and work group to ensure critical work is properly prioritized.

  • Lead team activities during emergency outages by communicating priorities and coordinating efforts

  • Proficient in and provide support responsible for verifying and recording plant performance relative to EPA and City permits, including daily compliance monitoring.

  • Support other operator personnel as necessary by performing rounds, monitoring/reacting to alarms, writing permits, etc.

  • Assist Dissolver Operator and Stationary Engineer during upsets, power failures, etc.

  • Maintain housekeeping and safety responsibilities per plant standards for assigned operating areas.

  • Lubricate, inspect and clean equipment within the area.

  • During downtime, perform miscellaneous plant duties as assigned by supervisors.

  • Prepare operating logs, SPC charts, field notes and any other form of documentation required for the plant as assigned to their area. This may be in paper or digital format.

  • Operate the related controls including visual check, temperature, checks and analysis of all operating data for blending and loading.

  • Handle raw material paperwork.

  • Handle and understand shipping and loading paperwork.

  • Perform basic chemical tests and math calculations per written procedures.

  • Maintain department shipping records and paperwork.

  • Perform light maintenance such as changing stir lines, installing steam lines, strainer clean-outs, etc.

  • Maintain proper housekeeping and safety standards.

  • Operate flash tanks, strainers, pilot dissolver, and related equipment.

  • Share overtime shipping requirements.

  • They will attend and participate in the demand planning meeting.

  • They will respond to emails from the supply chain and sales teams.

  • During down time or slower periods, perform work as directed by supervisor such as general plant clean up.

  • Attend all monthly safety meetings, town halls, visitor meetings, scheduled training, and morning meetings,

  • They will complete all required equipment rounds, critical item inspections, and document any findings in any required format.

  • They will utilize SAP and write notifications for the items they find. The notification # will also be entered into the logbook. They will follow any other responsibilities required by the routine maintenance process.

  • They will utilize SAP for the reviewing and entering shipping schedules, product data, etc.

  • They will complete any other tasks that the supervisor assigned. This may include items not listed in this document or an item on other job description.

  • They will follow all of Oxy Chem's policies, procedures and guidelines. This includes the operational excellence guideline.

  • Be able to perform all of the proper lab analysis with the equipment.

  • Be able to use Lab Manager software, PI, and the blender spreadsheets.

  • They will complete monthly critical item checks and MYCORE4.

  • They will complete quarterly a job observation and a key procedure evaluation.

  • They will participate/complete all of their training on time. This includes in person scheduled training on schedule and days off.

  • They will complete what is in the supervisor night notes. If they cannot, then they must notify the supervisor.

  • They will maintain their Blending Operator qualification.

  • Understand duties to insure proper housekeeping and safety.

  • Assist during periods of operator training as a trainer/support operator.

  • Must be capable of communicating and interfacing effectively with all personnel, to include customers and vendors.

  • Operate all facets of the silicate filtering process including cleaning. Operation of filters includes periods of physical labor to clean residues for proper disposal. Operation of process includes filtering, blending and adjusting of product to meet all customer requirements.

  • Perform basic chemical tests, operating lab equipment to complete analysis for operation and shipping paperwork.

  • Maintain and prepare operational and shipping paperwork, including SPC/SQC methods.

  • Maintain a safe, clean working area in accordance with plant safety and housekeeping procedures.

  • Perform shipping and storage operations of filtered product including loading and testing of tank trucks, drums; adhering to all loading SOP's.

  • Provide efficient planning, scheduling of filter operation to maintain finished product to meet customer requirements. Recommend task/man hour plans, raw material requirements, process materials requirements, and miscellaneous equipment/part needs. Maintain area inventory of supplies and parts for filtering process.

  • During slow periods or down time, perform laborer assignments plant wide.

  • Obtain a fork lift license and operate a forklift per plant policies.

  • Physically capable of handling bagged material or drummed material which requires lifting and manual exertion.

  • Basic reading and math skills to handle bills of lading, labeling, and additional miscellaneous shipping and receiving papers.

  • Loading and unloading of bulk material.

  • Labeling of packaged material per OSHA and DOT standards.

  • Standard shift: 8 hours a shifts 5 days a week. The day and start time is dependent on shipping needs. Weekends maybe scheduled depending on business need.

  • Rotate through all areas to maintain competency and qualifications.

  • Ability to provide coverage to the Filter Operator, and Warehouse Operator area based on plant operating conditions.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or completed GED.

  • Process Technology Degree OR minimum of 2 years relevant work experience (e.g. production, packaging, loading, or maintenance) in a chemical plant or manufacturing environment.

  • Proficiency in math, reading comprehension, and mechanical reasoning with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work a rotating shift; weekends; holidays; overtime; and respond to callouts.

  • Ability and willingness to serve as member of Emergency Response Team.

  • Ability to read, write and speak in English.

  • Proficient in Microsoft applications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team.

  • Must possess valid driver's license.

  • Physical requirements - Must be able to lift 55 lbs, climb ladders and stairs. Walking, bending, stooping is required. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including the use of a respirator. Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
