Positional Summary

This position is a full time one-year appointment for a Postdoctoral Psychology Resident to provide a wide range of clinical and outreach services to Duke students in a fast-paced, high-demand university environment. This role requires enthusiasm to work with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, a commitment to holistic student well-being, and an openness to innovative mental health service delivery models. Under the guidance of the Director and the CAPS Site Training Director, the Postdoctoral Psychology Resident will provide individual and group counseling services, intake assessments, crisis interventions, emergency on-call services, case management activities, outreach, and related counseling center administration. Clinical supervision for licensure will be provided by a licensed psychologist at CAPS. The Resident will work with the CAPS Site Training Director to collaboratively identify an area of focus for the postdoctoral training year based on their areas of interest. The Resident will be expected to contribute to service development, quality improvement, and/or outreach programming associated with their focus area. The Resident's work will be guided by a commitment to serve the Duke University students by providing timely and culturally responsive clinical services to a diverse student body. Successful candidates would be experienced in providing brief, time-limited therapy services, skilled in crisis management, and have a passion for promoting overall student wellbeing. The individual must be a strong generalist who can provide multimodal treatments and understands the unique developmental stages and mental health concerns of college aged student population.

Key Position Duties

Direct Services- 60%



  • Conduct initial intakes, determine and recommend treatment plan, and provide ongoing therapy services. Provide single session therapy, as requested.
  • Initiate and facilitate group therapy services that may include process, support, or skill-based spaces.
  • Provide triage, crisis care, and clinical consultation to Duke students presenting with acute distress. Assess, deescalate, support, and make appropriate treatment referrals.
  • Develop and facilitate outreach and workshops on various mental health and wellness topics, placing priority on expanding service access for all students.
  • Participate in campus-wide prevention efforts.
  • Under supervision from licensed psychologist, may provide supervision of doctoral psychology interns and/or master's students and contribute to didactic seminars.


Administrative and Professional Duties- 35%



  • Participate in a minimum of one hour per week of individual supervision with a licensed psychologist in accordance with state laws and policies governing the practice of psychology by postdoctoral psychology residents.
  • Apply for licensure with the North Carolina Psychology Board within 30 days of beginning the practice of psychology at CAPS.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with state laws, ethical guidelines, and per CAPS policies and procedures.
  • Utilize Electronic Medical Record System to maintain client records in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Work collaboratively and respectfully with internal and external colleagues.
  • Consult with psychiatrists who provide medication management for psychotherapy clients to coordinate care.
  • Provide consultation to campus partners, families, and community providers to coordinate student care.
  • Follow agency policies and procedures consistent with state mental health statutes, ethical guidelines, best practices, and HIPAA
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for after-hours emergency services.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, clinical consultation team meetings, CE presentations, as well as applicable training seminars.
  • Serve on committees, as assigned by the CAPS leadership.
  • Receive administrative supervision and coaching regarding development of professional identity.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in college mental health and work toward permanent licensure. Attend local, regional, and national conferences, as time permitted.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all ethical standards.


Other- 5%



  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet departmental, Division and University goals and objectives, as assigned by their Supervisor, Director, or respective designees.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Minimum Education


    • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA approved program.


  • Minimum Experience


    • Successful completion of an APA-accredited doctoral internship program.




Strongly Preferred Education and Experience:



  • Education: Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA approved program.
  • Experiences:


    • Demonstrated experience providing evidence-based mental health services, including individual and group therapy.
    • Demonstrated experience in crisis assessment, intervention, consultation and case management.
    • Demonstrated experience in working with emerging and young adult population, preferably in a university counseling setting.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills to manage clinical caseload in a demanding environment.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
    • Strong commitment to overall wellbeing of students of all communities.




Preferred Skills and Competencies



  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical assessment and treatment planning, provision of crisis intervention, brief individual and group therapy and consultation/case management.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or strong interest in the roles of a university counseling center staff professionals, including individual psychotherapy, group therapy, supervision of masters and doctoral level graduate students, case management, outreach and consultation and center administration.
  • Demonstrated developing expertise in stress and other performance related issues, relationship skills, mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, alcohol/substance abuse, and/or other developmental issues of college students.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills. Proficient with EMHR.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team in a university counseling center.
  • Experience with and commitment to working with diverse clients.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and use excellent judgment in working with student clients who need CAPS services.
  • The ideal candidate must be self-motivated and able to manage independent projects as well as collaborative teamwork.
