Job Summary

This position exists to support the core research operations of the lab and ensure that multiple ongoing studies run smoothly and efficiently. The role manages key operational functions-including data management, study coordination, regulatory compliance, and preparation of research products-that enable day-to-day lab activity. Responsibilities include maintaining study databases, coordinating meetings and staff schedules, facilitating data requests and transfers, and overseeing administrative workflows. The position also maintains IRB/CHR submissions and documentation to ensure regulatory compliance for all human subjects research. In addition, the role helps clean, prepare and analyze data, generates figures and tables, and contributes to manuscripts and abstracts. Overall, this position serves as the central support for study operations across multiple observational research projects in the lab.

The primary responsibility of the Staff Research Associate (SRA I) is to assist in the identification of appropriate cases for sequencing, following required documentation and protocols as needed, obtain samples and be responsible for quality control and extraction of DNA/RNA from these samples. Samples are often very small, so the individual needs to be familiar with procedures for working with small samples.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Moon (sleep) Lab for Artificial Intelligence Technology (MoonLAIT) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is led by Dr. Yue Leng, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UCSF. MoonLAIT is not just another research lab; it is where data, sleep science, and innovation come together to redefine our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. We explore the untapped frontiers of sleep research, employing big data and machine learning, and aim to be the trailblazers in early detection and intervention strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.

Required Qualifications


  • SRA I: BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • SRA II: BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; and excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team.
  • Attention to details;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Windows.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment; project management and coordination skills; ability to prioritize tasks and meet multiple deadlines on concurrent projects.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Proficiency in a statistical coding program (e.g. R, Python)
  • BA/BA degree in a science-related field; preferably public health, epidemiology, health sciences, psychology, or biostatistics.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with medical terminology.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with patients or study subjects.
  • Ability to abstract data from medical records and transfer it to data collection forms or directly into databases.
