DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

POSITION SUMMARY

Senior Network Engineer plays a critical role within a small team of IT professionals, managing and maintaining the network infrastructure of the UC Washington Center. This 11-story mixed-use facility in Washington, D.C. houses students, faculty, and various UC offices, including the Office of Federal Governmental Relations (FGR). The engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliability and performance of the existing network, promptly resolving any disruptions, and extending or upgrading the infrastructure as needed. This role may involve working outside normal business hours and occasionally requires travel. This position is located in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

40% Network and Security Management: Lead the planning, design, development, and implementation of network and security systems. Provide user support, training, and system maintenance, and ensure quality assurance for all network systems. Collaborate with IT and business partners to define, document, and implement new systems and functionalities. Configure and manage enterprise-level network and security protocols. Analyze and improve current workflows and system integration to enhance performance. Lead application testing and recommend processes to optimize network designs and new developments. And conduct interviews with users to interpret and document their current state environments.

  • 25% Team Leadership and Technical Problem Solving: Use leadership skills to resolve complex technical challenges and lead team members in delivering project components such as testing and training. Act as the primary liaison for operational planning, workflow testing, and development. Work independently to make decisions and provide recommendations for improvements in system quality, efficiency, and functionality.
  • 25% Research and Strategic Implementation: Design and implement large, complex network projects across the institution. Participate in planning, developing, and evaluating information systems that support UCDC's strategic operations. Develop comprehensive documentation for network projects and apply best practices and departmental policies. Serve as a technical lead for multiple moderate to broad-scope projects, ensuring the implementation and maintenance of detailed project plans.
  • 10% Support and Maintenance: Act as the main IT point of contact for network and security-related support and maintenance. Provide 24/7 on-call support during emergencies and perform regular maintenance of systems during off-hours, including weekends. Crosstrain with other IT staff and provide backup for other technology areas such as A/V, multimedia systems, and PC support as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise-level LAN/WAN/WLAN networks
  • In-depth experience with Cisco VSS routers, switches, Next Generation Firewalls, Firewall Threat Defense (FTD), and ASA firewalls.
  • Expertise in OSI layers 2 and 3, IP/TEP protocols, and related industry standards.
  • Strong understanding of network hardware platforms, protocols, and software.
  • Ability to design and deploy configurations in Nutanix and Entra ID environments.
  • Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.
  • Advanced knowledge of network and communication systems, including voice and data field techniques.
  • Highly developed problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex issues independently.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with cabling plans, standards, and overseeing installation processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Windows DNS/DHCP implementations.
  • Experience with Cisco firewall policies, IPSEC tunnels, and Remote VPN configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced knowledge of OSPF and BGP routing protocols, with experience implementing them on Cisco devices.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

License/Certifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • CCNA Certification

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
