Job Description

Position Summary:

The Metallurgy/Process Engineering Manager brings a strong background in materials science, hands-on experience in metallurgy for aerospace applications, and the ability to manage multiple projects across departments. This position requires a U.S. Citizenship due to the use of information or access to production processes subject to national security controls. Directs and coordinates activities of metallurgical activities and materials engineering functions for manufactured products by performing the following duties:

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for ensuring that manufacturing processes and metallurgical testing of product is in accordance with customer agreed fixed processes and relevant internal procedures and relevant work instructions.
  • Accountable for ensuring that metallurgical testing performed on product is compliant with all internal and external requirements.
  • Communicates effectively with the business on all metallurgical issues arising and develops and implements appropriate response plans.
  • Accountable for the standard work to be conducted by the metallurgy team in daily activities in support of operations and production control. Standard work for the team includes
    • Verification of incoming purchased material against requirements
    • Review and release of VAR melted product
    • Assign heat codes, review mill certifications
    • release of jobs to the shop floor
    • NCR/MRR Processes - Review and disposition of issues arising.
    • Root cause investigations and development and verification of corrective actions as appropriate
    • Management of the business processes associated with metallurgical testing
  • Works with quality, engineering and operations functions to ensure that NPI processes are implemented effectively and that defined processes are aligned with the metallurgical requirements defined by the relevant customer documentation
  • Support engineering and operations in relevant process development
  • Lead the metallurgical team and coordinate with engineering, operations and division/corporate resources to investigate complex metallurgical and/or manufacturing issues.
  • Builds relationships across the Shultz business and wider PCC resources to create breadth and depth in the metallurgical team through mentoring, networking and training.
  • Management of the business processes associated with the execution of testing of product at the approved testing laboratories using agreed test plans.
  • Supervises up to 8 employees in Metallurgy functions. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field (Master's degree preferred)
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in metallurgy within aerospace manufacturing
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience with metallurgy staff
  • Strong working knowledge of aerospace materials, including titanium, aluminum, high-temp alloys, and stainless steels.
  • Experience working with external test labs and interpreting lab results.
  • Familiarity with AS9100, NADCAP, and other relevant aerospace standards.
  • Experience with special processing techniques (e.g., heat treat, NDT, surface treatments).

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $125000 to $172000 US Dollar (USD) Salaried based on a variety of factors. For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company's Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 3X the Company's bonus multiple, based on the Company's performance in the applicable quarter . Employees will receive 120 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays. Employees (and their families) are eligible to participate in the company's medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Company's 401(k) plan.

This position requires use of information or access to production processes subject to national security controls under U.S. export control laws and regulations (including, but not limited to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)).
