Senior WLAN Engineer The Senior WLAN engineer will work with a global team and be responsible for Wi-Fi commissioning, RF analysis, and optimization of Boingo Wi-Fi Networks. They will provide technical expertise supporting existing Wi-Fi networks as well as planning and optimizing new networks. The engineer will also support day-to-day operations of the RF environment of many Boingo Wi-Fi networks, consisting of Airports, Stadiums, and other deployments to support customer needs. The position will require excellent communication skills, working with cross-functional teams across all Boingo Departments, as well as direct interaction with customers remotely and onsite. Specialization in WLAN Access Networks, Wireless troubleshooting, and WLAN infrastructures is required. This role will require subject matter knowledge of wireless RF networking best practices, knowledge of Cisco, Ruckus, and Extreme wireless controllers, Access Points, Networking, associated services platforms, and a thorough understanding of enterprise-scale Wi-Fi networks. Responsibilities
- Participate in the design, engineering, and support of complex, enterprise-scale, commercial Wi-Fi networks.
- Peer review of predictive RF Models using software-based modeling tools for proposed production networks.
- Conduct site surveys as needed using software-based survey and spectrum analysis tools.
- Configuration and optimization of Cisco, Ruckus, and Extreme Wireless LAN Controllers, and associated services platforms.
- Communicate installation best practices, written and verbal, to onsite teams, ensuring proper equipment installation procedures are followed for APs, Antennas, and Point-to-Point Wireless links, and other components.
- Provide operational support, configuration, and implementation of change request services.
- Plan, analyze, commission, optimize, and troubleshoot high-density Wi-Fi networks, point-to-point links, and other wireless network components.
- Plan and deploy key WLAN applications, including Secure Mobility, Voice over WLAN, Passpoint, and Wireless Guest Access.
- WLAN network RF frequency and static channel/power planning for a variety of venue types.
- Working understanding of best practice configurations by deployment type for all Wi-Fi access frequencies, including 6GHz and AFC.
- Evaluation of WLAN systems, including access points, controllers, antennas, and various other components and equipment.
- Manage, coordinate, and prioritize tasks to ensure quality work is delivered in a timely manner.
- Develop and maintain documentation related to the design, administration, and maintenance of network infrastructure.
- Draft thorough technical responses to support proposed design recommendations.
- Draft technical standards and best practices documents to add to the Boingo repository.
Requirements
- Subject matter expert in Wi-Fi/RF solutions, architecture, and network optimization.
- At least 6 years of experience in the design and implementation of large-scale, high-capacity Managed Service Provider (MSP) and campus networks, including enterprise-level WLAN solutions.
- Hands-on experience with Cisco Wireless Controller; 9800/8510/8540, Ruckus SmartZone/vSZ, and Extreme wireless technologies.
- Experience designing and deploying large-scale Cisco, Ruckus, and Extreme WLAN / Wi-Fi networks.
- Thorough understanding of WLAN technologies, security, and network management, including knowledge of wireless technologies; IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/ac/ax/be and point-to-point radio links.
- Expert-level troubleshooting in a large-scale wireless network environment.
- Experience designing and deploying key WLAN applications, including Secure Mobility, Voice over WLAN, and Wireless Guest Access.
- Experience with Ekahau ESS Pro, and spectrum analysis software required.
- Cisco routing, switching, and WLAN core skills preferred.
- TCP/IP Network Architecture and Design skills preferred.
- Confident in customer-facing discussions for timely resolution related to network performance and customer experience.
- Works well on a team as well as being able to work independently.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office & Visio Suite.
- Degree in CS or ECE or equivalent experience.
