Assistant Managing Editor, Crain's New York Business

Crain Communications
retirement plan, remote work
United States, New York, New York
Nov 12, 2025
Description

Crain's New York Business - the city's essential source for news at the intersection of business, power and policy - is seeking a sharp, highly organized Assistant Managing Editor to help drive our daily coverage and support our newsroom leadership.

This role is ideal for an editor who thrives in a fast-paced digital environment, has strong news judgment, and knows how to elevate copy, but isn't necessarily looking to be the No. 1 in the room yet. The Assistant Managing Editor will work closely with the Editor and senior editors to execute agenda-setting coverage while keeping a strong focus on impact, audience growth and quality.

What you'll do

  • Support the Editor in day-to-day newsroom operations, helping move stories from pitch to publication across digital, print, newsletters, social and events.
  • Help lead the daily news meeting: surface smart ideas, pressure-test pitches, flag gaps, and recommend formats and framing that best serve a C-suite, investor and policy-focused audience.
  • Line edit and top edit stories with speed and precision - sharpening ledes, tightening structure, clarifying service elements and ensuring every story reflects Crain's New York Business standards.
  • Work closely with reporters to keep coverage on track: confirm angles, deadlines, sourcing expectations and follow-ups on major breaking and developing stories.
  • Partner with the audience/digital team to monitor real-time metrics and reader behavior and help translate insights into headline, framing, timing and promotion decisions.
  • Encourage experimentation with storytelling formats - including graphics, charts, short-form video, explainers, data-driven features, newsletters and event-related coverage - and help execute them.
  • Support planning and execution of enterprise and investigative projects by managing timelines, coordinating across beats and ensuring strong digital presentation.
  • Use AI tools and other newsroom technology responsibly to increase efficiency, support research and improve production workflows.
  • Serve as a key point of contact on busy news days, helping triage assignments and maintain high standards when senior leaders are focused on longer-term priorities.
  • Work with editors and reporters to reinforce best practices around accuracy, ethics, sourcing, fairness and clarity.
  • Occasionally represent Crain's New York Business at events, panels and other public-facing opportunities as part of the editorial leadership team.

What you bring

  • 3+ years of editing experience in a competitive, deadline-driven newsroom; experience helping guide coverage or overseeing parts of the report is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to spot the real story in complex business, real estate, political and policy developments - and shape coverage for a sophisticated New York business audience.
  • Experience in business or metro journalism; comfort working with earnings reports, public filings, budgets, campaign proposals and policy documents.
  • Proven line-editing skills: you can quickly improve structure, sharpen analysis, strengthen voice and eliminate errors.
  • Familiarity with audience analytics and digital publishing tools, and an interest in using data to inform decisions on headlines, formats and priorities.
  • Openness to testing new formats and tools - from newsletters and alerts to AI-assisted workflows - and the judgment to know what serves readers best.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset: you're comfortable giving clear feedback, supporting colleagues, and reinforcing expectations set by newsroom leadership.
  • A high bar for accuracy, fairness and ethics, and a calm, solutions-oriented approach under deadline pressure.
  • Flexibility to work occasional early mornings, evenings or weekends to support coverage of major news events.

If you're an editor who loves shaping sharp, high-impact coverage and wants to grow as a newsroom leader inside one of New York's most influential business publications, we'd like to hear from you.

Where you work matters. The job posting will provide specific information on where and when your amazing work would be performed. Employee work location is determined by the needs of the specific team and may include on-site, hybrid or remote. Employee work location is subject to change.

  • An "in-office" role would require the employee to come into the office most days with occasional flexibility to work remotely if tasks can be performed elsewhere and if the manager approves.
  • A "remote" role would allow an employee to work from a home office that is in one of the states Crain does business in. We can only employ a remote / "work from home" employee if they reside in one of these states: AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MA, MI, MN, NV, NY, NC, OH, OR, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI, and Washington, DC.
  • A "hybrid" role would be a mix of in-office and remote work. There may be a specified schedule for coming into the office or it could be at the discretion of the employee with the manager's approval, subject to change.
  • Employees who live within a reasonable commute distance from a Crain office are expected to work on-site 3 days per week.

Many positions will also include work done in "the field." Depending on the role, this may include conducting in-person interviews, attending work-related events, meeting with sources or clients. Specifics will be noted in the job posting but are subject to change as a role evolves. Employees may be exposed to adverse environmental conditions, specifically during field work. Other typical job functions are performed under conditions such as those found in general office work.

Travel to cover news stories/events, meetings with clients, and to our geographically separated offices may be required. It is the nature of many positions to experience non-standard working hours and be on-call when needed for responding to email, meeting with clients, attending work-related events, story development or breaking news. Most employees perform work Monday through Friday, although early-morning, evening or weekend shifts may be required. Work schedule and travel requirements are subject to change as a role and needs evolve over time.
