Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - New Product Development

Aurora, IL Full-Time Leadership + Innovation

Build the Future of Packaging Machinery - and the Next Generation of Engineers

Are you a seasoned mechanical engineer with a passion for designing complex machinery and guiding others to do the same? At Pregis, we're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the development of cutting-edge packaging equipment - and to coach, mentor, and inspire junior engineers along the way.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role within our New Product Development (NPD) team, where you'll take early-stage concepts and turn them into scalable, manufacturable solutions. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams across engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and electrical disciplines - and play a key role in shaping both our technology and our talent.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the design, prototyping, and launch of advanced packaging machinery using SolidWorks and ePDM
  • Own the full mechanical lifecycle: concept, CAD modeling, BOM creation, testing, and field validation
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers on system integration, motor/sensor selection, and sequencing
  • Present and release design documentation for stakeholder review and production readiness
  • Support beta deployments and troubleshoot real-world performance issues
  • Analyze field feedback, competitive equipment, and emerging technologies to drive innovation
  • Engage directly with customers to uncover pain points and translate them into design opportunities
  • Mentor junior engineers through design reviews, technical guidance, and hands-on coaching

What You Bring

  • 10+ years of experience in machine design - packaging machinery preferred
  • Strong background in electro-mechanical and pneumatic systems
  • Hands-on prototyping experience in R&D or manufacturing environments
  • Mastery of SolidWorks, ePDM, and ERP systems for mechanical design and documentation
  • Deep understanding of part design, tolerance analysis, and DFM principles
  • Creative problem-solving mindset with a builder's mentality
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit
  • Proven ability to mentor, coach, and develop junior engineering talent
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering

Bonus Points

  • Experience with firmware, software, or data acquisition systems
  • Familiarity with paper packaging systems or materials
  • Prior use of tools, fixtures, and testing devices in development environments
  • Project leadership or cross-functional team management experience

Why Join Us?

  • Work on innovative, high-performance machinery that shapes the future of packaging
  • Lead and mentor a talented team of engineers eager to learn and grow
  • Collaborate across disciplines in a fast-paced, hands-on environment
  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • A culture that values technical excellence, continuous improvement, and leadership at every level

Compensation & Perks

  • Competitive base salary: $120,000s to $150,000s, depending on experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge equipment in a growth-focused company
  • A culture that values innovation, ownership, and continuous learning
