| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Art and Art History engages in both local and global communities and is a place for creative endeavors and scholarly investigation through faculty research, graduate student training, undergraduate programs and public events. The department engages in teaching and research in all aspects of art, applied and in theory. The department is an integral part of the interdisciplinary community dedicated to the arts and sciences. Art and Art History produces works of art and scholarly research in multiple forms and seeks to promote visual literacy, the process of critical and creative thinking, and the primacy of arts and goals for the entire University. The Department of Art and Art History has a permanent faculty count of 25 who provide instruction on both the undergraduate and graduate level. The department currently has 128 studio art majors, 163 studio art minors, 43 art history majors and 41 art history minors. There are also 14 M.F.A. graduate students and 13 M.A. graduate students, as well as 24 Ph.D. graduate students in art history. Approximately 2800 students take courses in the department each year. |
