Reporting to the Financial Manager, the Accountant III will work closely with various L&S departments as a subject matter expert in accounting and financial operations, policies, and procedures. Additionally, they will provide expertise on transactional and budget management tailored to the specific needs of each discipline. The role involves key functions, such as:


  • Approval of expense reimbursement, purchasing, procurement, billing operations, cost transfers and accounting journals based on review of financial coding for accuracy and available resources

  • Provide financial reporting solutions to the finance manager and departmental stakeholders to facilitate data informed decision making

  • Monitor available funding on state funds, tuition funds, gift funding, and other program revenue sources and work with departments to facilitate revenue collection and/or cost transfers to mitigate any accounts in deficit

  • Coordinating with the supervising financial manager to ensure continuous workload re-prioritization needs are addressed in timely manner

  • Supporting and collaborating with other Accountant IIIs and Financial Specialists on the team


Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Leads and executes the development, organization, preparation, and updating of complex financial statements, journals, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions

  • Develops and manages complex work unit budgets, analyzing funding sources, operational needs, budget trends, and financial commitments

  • Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures

  • Forecasts budget balances and recommends corrective action as needed

  • Performs complex accounting and auditing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports

  • Monitors automated financial systems, develops, and documents controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity

  • Prepares and analyzes financial reports, data and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, and recommends solutions as needed

  • Facilitates trainings and provides financial guidance to management and staff

The College of Letters & Science (L&S) is the heart of UW-Madison and home to a tremendous breadth and depth of departments and degree-granting programs in the humanities; natural, physical, and mathematical sciences; social sciences; and the computing, data, and information sciences.

Compensation:

The typical starting salary for this position is $57,000 - $80,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3 years of accounting or financial reporting/auditing experience

  • Advanced skills using Microsoft Excel including complex formulas, pivot tables, and creating dashboards

  • Experience working with and interpreting policies and regulations and applying them to practical situations

  • Experience providing customer service to a variety of audiences (responding to inquiries, working with people of varying backgrounds, troubleshooting, follow-up, providing basic training, communicating technical concepts)

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage competing transactions

  • Evidence of successful creative problem solving

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with change management, such as financial systems or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems preferred

  • Experience in higher education, public service or similarly regulated industry
