Your Role at Baxter:

Our Healthcare Systems and Technologies segment is advancing the next generation of transformative healthcare innovations that will help deliver personalized care to patients, while helping to enhance workflow efficiency, enable cost-effective care and improve patient outcomes. Patient Support Systems (PSS) is focused on accelerating patient recovery. Clear visibility into patient status can help identify issues sooner to avoid common risks and enable faster treatment and recovery time. The PSS Product Portfolio meets customers' and patients' needs in acute care hospitals, long term care facilities and in the home and includes bed frames and surfaces, bariatric solutions, clinical workflow solutions, and patient handling solutions.

As the Associate Director R&D, PSS, you will be a functional leader to create strategy and execution plans for PSS Systems and V&V engineering NPD, Sustaining, Connectivity, and Codes & Standards (C&S). You will work closely with key cross-functional stakeholders, subject matter experts, and key opinion leaders (internal or external) to perform needs assessment, product ideation, and evaluation of product concepts. From these concepts, you will oversee the development and/or sustaining of system architecture, requirements, risk management, connectivity, reliability, verification, validation, and C&S compliance. In addition, you will provide technical leadership for teams to ensure the completion of complex projects and programs within boundaries of quality, time, and budget. You will foster an environment of creativity and innovation within R&D and employ kaizen to create and implement best-practice methodologies and processes. Based on significant technical expertise, you'll review and approve complex designs and provide direction to technical staff. You will supervise high-level professionals/engineers in their assigned project activities and/or teams led by managers/senior managers.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Create and communicate processes, standards or operational plans in support of the business vison and goals, ensuring industry leadership. Inspire team to action consistent with vision. Establish high standards and stretch goals for organization. Remove barriers to outstanding performance. Hold team accountable for successful completion of projects/tasks.

  • Select, develop and retain teams that include technical contributors and managers/senior managers. Define and communicate criteria by which team and individual success will be measured. Provide constructive feedback and recognition.

  • Provide technical guidance for a large-scale program, or several small projects with complex features, in the areas of release of new products, product improvements, value improvements, changes in regulatory requirements, review supplier-initiated changes, and complaint investigations.

  • Solve problems expeditiously through the use of multiple disciplines and technical principles. Create innovative products/processes/methods through novel combinations of expertise within the organization.

  • Provide leadership to teams and team members, guiding them in terms of prioritization, problem resolution, process clarification, referrals to appropriate experts, etc. Creates schedules and budgets as part of certain processes and projects and aligns with cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Successfully coach, mentor and motivate others, and remove barriers to drive to exceptional performance. Ensure development of state-of-the-art expertise in industry and function specialties within defined scope of responsibility.

  • Provide leadership to cross-functional technical teams both internal and external to Baxter in accordance with best practices for innovation and new product development.

  • Understand strategic imperatives to project success (e.g. timing of market entry, innovative technology and costs). Develop strategic plans that incorporate regional and global business practices and customer needs.

  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant quality system regulations, FDA, EUMDR, and other global C&S/regulatory requirements related to research and development (product development, design, and safety) to ensure compliance in all research, data collection and reporting activities.

  • Actively pursue options to reduce the cost and time of product development.

  • Actively communicate status on key projects within and outside of the GBU to senior level executives.

  • Build a professional network both internally within the business unit, across units and outside of Baxter.

  • Manage team members to effectively transfer technology from design development to implementation.

Your Team:

Reporting to the Director R&D, PSS Global Systems Engineering and Services, the Associate Director, R&D, PSS Systems Engineering, V&V, Connectivity, and Codes & Standards will lead a team up to 11.

Your Location:

The role is located at our prominent R&D and manufacturing facility in Batesville, Indiana (halfway between Indianapolis and Cincinnati). Relocation will be provided. Baxter is committed to supporting the needs for flexibility in the workplace. We do so through our flexible workplace policy which includes a required minimum number of days a week onsite. This policy provides the benefits of connecting and collaborating in-person in support of our Mission. The flexible workplace policy is subject to local laws and legal requirements. What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor's with minimum 14 years of experience, Master's with 11 years of experience or Ph.D. with 8 years relevant experience (systems engineering, V&V, etc)

  • Medical device/MedTech industry experience is required

  • Must demonstrate moderately complex strategic leadership, and effective mentoring and management capabilities

  • Must possess strong knowledge of scientific/technical disciplines and solid knowledge of related disciplines such as Systems and V&V engineering, codes & standards, connectivity, regulatory, quality, and/or product development. Recognized internally and externally as expert in Systems and V&V Engineering and Connectivity

  • Ability to manage multiple cross-functional teams simultaneously

  • Ability to design and implement projects/studies outside area of expertise

  • Ability to communicate effectively using a wide variety of skills and vehicles and to various audiences including senior leadership

  • Ability to influence change through negotiation and compromise

  • Understanding of financial tools and capable of budgeting, staffing and managing expense priorities

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all our employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $168,000 - $231,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, and/or long-term incentive.
