About the Job

This position supports the on-going management of a growing rare book collection within the Givens Collection of African American Literature and Life housed at Elmer L. Andersen Library. The temporary employee will work directly with the Curator of the Givens Collection and communicate with University of Minnesota Libraries to re-catalog the existing rare book collection and to catalog newly acquired books for the John S. Wright Collection of Africana Studies and Criticism.

This position is in-person only; remote work is not available.

Hours/Availability: Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Responsibilities

Recording (50 %)

  • Scan 4000+ book slips to create an electronic inventory of the re-trayed books' new locations.
  • Set aside and keep a record of duplicate copies for deaccessioning.

Placing (40%)

  • Receive batches of new book slips; replace old book slips with news ones indicating new book locations.

Communicating (10%)

  • Send batches of inventory to Libraries cataloging and communicate regularly about the progress of recataloging.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Attention to detail in an environment with repetitive tasks.
  • Basic office skills, especially sorting and accurate typing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated interest in African American literature and history.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff.

Physical Requirements (if applicable)

  • Must be able to lift up to 40lb book trays repeatedly for short periods of time.
  • Must be able endure long periods of standing, repeated stooping/bending and reaching.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $17.00/hour
