Join Our Team as a Power Systems Control Intern!

This position is for a summer intern in the Power Systems Control team. Our team works on advanced engineering projects such as commercial and industrial facilities, renewable energy sites, microgrid systems, distribution automation systems, and standalone islanded systems. Work within the team includes developing drawings, preparing specifications, electrical system design, power system controls design and programming, factory acceptance testing, and on-site system commissioning.

The intern will be responsible for contributing to project engineering efforts and working closely with multiple team members to directly support project work. All delivered work will be supervised, but the position requires someone with a self-motivated work ethic and dedication to tackle complex problems.

The intern will report to the Manager of Power Systems Control in the Engineering Solutions department and will be based in S&C's Chicago, IL headquarters.

The goals for this internship include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Develop an understanding of how to read and interpret electrical design drawings, including one-line, three-line, communication, and wiring diagrams.


  • Create and update electrical design drawings in AutoCAD.


  • Work closely with team members during Factory Acceptance Testing of S&C manufactured equipment, including assisting with developing the procedures and performing physical testing of the equipment.


  • Work in the hardware lab to design and implement test environments for real-world applications, communicate with hardware such as protective relays, automation controllers, and microgrid control systems.


  • Design and develop communication libraries for the GridMaster Microgrid Control System to interact with S&C manufactured equipment and third-party devices.


  • Develop an understanding of the lifecycle of power system control development, from initial design through final commissioning.


  • Document and communicate effectively to internal stakeholders including writing reports and delivering presentations.

To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:


  • Enrolled in an Electrical Engineering program at an accredited university.


  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.


  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.


  • Familiarity with or interest in SCADA protocols such as Modbus and DNP3.


  • Familiarity with or interest in electrical power generation, distribution, and/or microgrids.


  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or other drawing programs is a plus.
