Torch Technologies is seeking a highly experienced Senior Software Engineer / Backend Developer with deep expertise in microservices architecture, API design (REST/gRPC), and containerized backend development using Go, Java, Python, and Docker.

In this senior role, you will be responsible for the design, development, and analysis of highly complex backend systems supporting scalable, distributed applications. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams-including hardware and DevOps engineers-to ensure system-level compatibility and robust, performant solutions. You may also provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members.

As a Software Engineer/Backend Developer your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Architect, design, develop, and optimize backend systems using microservices and modern backend frameworks.

  • Design and implement high-performance, secure RESTful APIs and gRPC services.

  • Perform systems modeling, simulation, profiling, and in-depth performance tuning.

  • Collaborate with hardware and systems engineering teams to resolve complex compatibility or integration issues.

  • Drive best practices for code quality, maintainability, testing, and observability.

  • Lead or mentor junior engineers and support technical decision-making across teams.

  • Contribute to documentation of system architecture, workflows, APIs, and operational procedures.

  • Engage in the full software development lifecycle: planning, design, coding, testing, deployment, and support.

  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and patterns to continuously improve system robustness and team productivity.

Required Qualifications:

  • US Citizenship.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience (Master's degree preferred).

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in software design and backend system development.
  • Active or eligible for DoD Security Clearance.

  • Proven experience working on highly available, scalable systems in production environments.

  • Strong architectural understanding of distributed systems and microservices.

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Programming Languages: Proficient in Go (Golang), Java, and Python.

  • API Development: Expert in designing and implementing secure, scalable REST APIs and gRPC services. Deep understanding of API lifecycle management, testing, documentation, and versioning.

  • Microservices Architecture: Hands-on experience designing microservices for cloud-native environments. Understanding of service discovery, API gateways, and inter-service communication.

  • Containerization & Orchestration: Strong experience with Docker and containerized development. Experience with Kubernetes or other orchestration tools is a strong plus.

  • Systems Integration & Hardware Collaboration: Experience working with hardware/system engineers on projects involving software-hardware interaction.

  • Tooling & DevOps: Proficient with Git, CI/CD tools, and modern development pipelines. Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform), monitoring, and alerting tools is a plus.

  • Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills. Strong written and verbal communication. Ability to lead by example and mentor junior developers.

  • CI/CD & DevOps Tools: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, ArgoCD

  • Artifact Management: Artifactory, Nexus

  • Monitoring & Logging (optional): Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack

  • Databases: SQL, NoSQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.)

Schedule: M-F; 8-5

Work Location: Customer Site
