Overview

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Technology Counsel. This position will be based in our Global Operations & Innovation Center ("GOIC") in Wheeling, WV, or any of our U.S. offices, and can be potentially located remote anywhere in the U.S.

Senior Technology Counsel will drive and support training initiatives for attorneys related to practice technology, generative AI (GenAI), and AI fluency; risk and compliance efforts related to the use of technology in legal practice; and knowledge management strategies and projects to optimize and leverage data for the practice. Senior Technology Counsel will also bring the voice of the lawyer to the strategy, priorities, training and roll-out of enterprise technology.

The role reports to the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) and will work closely with departments across the firm including Innovation, the General Counsel's (GC) office, Digital Transformation and Data (DTD), Communications, Business Development, and Information Technology (IT).


Responsibilities

Enterprise Technology

  • Provide innovation and practice insights for key enterprise technology initiatives in collaboration with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the Chief Digital Officer (CDO), and members of their respective teams
  • Provide expert consultation on tool selection, features, business cases, and priorities based on the needs of the practice and innovation priorities
  • Lead the development of firm-wide policies to govern tool usage and drive attorney adoption
  • Collaborate with CTO, CDO, and CIO on presentations to firm leadership regarding strategy, priorities and necessary investment
  • Stay apprised of enterprise technology innovation in legal and other industries
  • Play a key role in leading and shaping attorney change management strategies required for enterprise technology
  • Craft and refine clear, impactful communications to support adoption by attorneys
  • Develop and monitor adoption metrics, such as usage rates and satisfaction surveys, to measure success
  • Make recommendations to license and sunset tools based on attorney usage and feedback
  • Travel to firm offices to deliver hands-on support, providing "white glove" service through on-site training, relationship-building, and gathering feedback to enhance user adoption and engagement

Training Initiatives

  • Support the Innovation Team in the development and delivery of training on GenAI and other legal technology
  • Review training prepared by IT, DTD and Research and Insight (R&I) teams to incorporate and reflect the attorney perspective and help drive adoption
  • Collaborate with Team Support leadership on development and deployment of "work smarter" initiatives to firm lawyers

Risk & Compliance

  • Support the General Counsel's office in the development and delivery of risk management training on technology and GenAI
  • Monitor developments in ethics and legal options regarding the use of technology in legal practice
  • Advise stakeholders on risk management considerations related to firm technology
  • Assist in drafting and revising technology related policies and alerts, and lead compliance related projects
  • Maintain template client communications and FAQs regarding the use of AI in the practice
  • Serve as member of AI Council and drive and support AI Council initiatives

Generative AI

  • Lead efforts with our partners to:
    • Better understand how clients are using AI in the business and legal department, and engage in AI conversations with clients
    • Drive fluency on AI technology, opportunities and industry use, in collaboration with stakeholders
    • Raise awareness of legal tech, professional services, and law firm competitive landscape
  • Support Innovation's delivery of GenAI practice labs, 1:1 concierge support, practice-related projects and other GenAI initiatives
  • Create and maintain GenAI related content (including standard language, case studies, and FAQs) for Business Development, Communications, Orrick.com and others

Knowledge Management

  • Develop strategies, lead projects and collaborate with DTD to leverage and optimize data from firm administrative and operational systems to deliver actionable insights for attorneys, and identify opportunities to integrate this data into legal workflows
  • Collaborate with CDO on solutions for attorney requests for experience data needed in the practice
  • Serve as an active member of the Data Council, providing insight and strategic contribution from practice groups for improving the use and quality of data
  • Ensure knowledge management practice needs are reflected in IT and DTD strategies, which are then delivered through enterprise and data technology deployments
  • Advise all stakeholders on knowledge management best practices in legal and other knowledge focused industries
  • Identify opportunities to better leverage data on Innovation team activity to spot client outreach opportunities, identify trends and share insights with the partnership

Thought Leadership

  • Contribute to Innovation thought leadership, including co-authoring articles and client alerts
  • Support and lead Innovation participation in ILTA, CLOC, and other industry events, with a clear strategy for return on investment
  • Co-present Innovation client CLEs

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
  • 10+ years of experience practicing law, preferably in a large law firm, with deep knowledge of legal workflows and client service.
  • Proven expertise in law firm innovation, including developing, implementing, or optimizing tech-driven tools and processes to enhance efficiency and client outcomes.
  • Experience in law firm knowledge management, including knowledge-sharing best practices.
  • Strong record of cross-departmental collaboration, including leading joint initiatives and building consensus among diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience working with IT, data professionals, and non-legal teams to align technology solutions with user needs and business objectives.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills, with background in training and education within a law firm setting, including designing and delivering sessions on AI, innovation, or tech adoption.
  • Demonstrated involvement in setting law firm technology strategy, including risk management, ethical considerations, and alignment with legal practice needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships, influence stakeholders diplomatically, and advocate for end-users.
  • Proven leadership abilities in strategic planning, initiative execution, and driving organizational change in a professional services environment.
  • Ability to travel to Orrick offices for in-person engagement.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is between:

  • California Major Markets* $250,000 - $300,000
  • New York City $250,000 - $300,000
  • National $250,000 - $300,000

* California Major Markets includes San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica. All other California locations fall within National range.

Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
