Position Overview

The Lab Ops-IT Portfolio Intern will provide support to the Business Relationship Management area supporting software and IT infrastructure for Exact Sciences Clinical and Production Laboratory and Operation teams. This intern would assist the Principle Portfolio Manager with IT Project Intake needs including monitoring and support for on-going projects and programs to ensure business objectives are met and accomplished on time, within budget, and meet quality standards. Specifically, this position will assist with IT system laboratory readiness for major programs and product rollouts, work closely with lab stakeholders on a review and recommendation for streamlining of IT applications and processes across all laboratories, and support various application implementations for laboratory and ops workflows.

This position will be primarily in-office based out of our location at 1 Exact Lane in Madison, WI. Some travel may be required between other Madison-area offices. This is a paid internship that will take place over 12 weeks in Summer 2026.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist the Principal Portfolio Manager with IT Project Intake needs including monitoring and support for ongoing projects and programs to ensure they meet business objectives, stay on schedule, and remain within budget.
  • Support the monitoring of project deliverables to ensure quality standards are achieved.
  • Contribute to documentation, reporting, and communication of project status, risks, and milestones.
  • Support IT system readiness efforts for major laboratory programs and product rollouts.
  • Help coordinate cross-functional activities to prepare labs for new IT infrastructure or software.
  • Participate in risk/issue tracking and resolution activities related to IT readiness in labs.
  • Work with laboratory stakeholders to assess current IT applications used across laboratories.
  • Assist in analyzing redundancies, inefficiencies, or opportunities to streamline applications and processes.
  • Provide recommendations to leadership on consolidation and improvement opportunities.
  • Assist in the deployment and adoption of new IT applications for laboratory processes.
  • Support testing, validation, and user feedback activities during implementations.
  • Help track and document lessons learned to improve future rollouts.
  • Collaborate with clinical and production laboratory teams, IT infrastructure teams, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment on priorities and requirements.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings and help capture and summarize feedback.
  • Support clear communication between business and IT groups to build understanding and trust.

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to act with an inclusion mindset and model these behaviors for the organization.
  • Ability to work designated schedule from 7:30am-4:30pm on-site in Madison.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.
  • Ability to use a telephone through a headset.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements if entry into laboratories is required.
  • Ability and means to travel 40% between local Exact Sciences Madison locations.
  • Ability to travel 5-10% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business, Life Sciences, or a related field or has at least a Bachelor's degree with 4 years of work experience.
  • Strong interest in how IT enables scientific, laboratory, or operational environments.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate processes, data, and systems to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Aptitude for learning new IT systems and applications quickly, with curiosity for how technology supports laboratory operations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize findings and present recommendations clearly.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel for data analysis, PowerPoint for presentations, Word for documentation).
  • Comfort with collaboration tools (Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, or similar platforms).
  • Basic familiarity with project management or task-tracking tools (e.g., Smartsheet, Jira, Trello, Asana, or ServiceNow).
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret data in Excel (formulas, pivot tables, charts).
  • Awareness of or exposure to reporting/visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar) is a plus.
  • Understanding of how to summarize data into insights and recommendations.
  • General understanding of IT infrastructure concepts (networks, servers, cloud, cybersecurity basics).
  • Familiarity with the idea of enterprise applications and how they support business processes.
  • Awareness of software implementation lifecycle (requirements, testing, rollout, support).
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior internship, research, or project experience in IT, laboratory operations, or a related field.
  • Exposure to project management practices, such as tracking milestones, deliverables, or budgets.
  • Experience working with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel pivot tables, Tableau, Power BI, or similar).
  • Demonstrated ability to document processes, requirements, or lessons learned in a structured way.
  • Interest in pursuing a career at the intersection of IT and business operations.
  • Interest in or exposure to lab information systems (LIS), manufacturing/operations IT, or healthcare systems.
  • Basic awareness of regulated environments (e.g., compliance, data integrity, validation requirements).

Salary Range:

$35,000.00 - $56,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis.
