Overview
Affiliated Engineers Metro DC, Inc. seeks a Project Engineer - Architecture in Rockville, MD. Salary range: $147,000 - $167,000 per year plus benefits (health, dental, vision) and eligibility for bonuses. Job requires up to 20% domestic travel to local and regional job sites to perform field verification and field surveys. Responsibilities: In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Review the layout of systems and equipment with project team members, project partners and clients.
- Lead overall engineering design process w/in a specific discipline for projects.
- Lead own discipline and collaborate with others to provide a level of consistency and coordination between documents created by all disciplines, both internal and external.
- Work collaboratively with the client & project partners to identify project technical requirements and user needs. Ask clarifying questions and validate understanding.
- Coordinate & collaborate with project partners, develop engineering concepts and recommendations based on project reqs, and offer technically sound advice and innovative solutions.
- Collaborate with the PM and engineering design team to develop a project work plan, including schedule of milestones & deliverables.
- Develop & manage work plans. Identify relevant project requirements/info required to establish conceptual plans & design criteria.
- Define and document applicable technical information in a basis of design, including info gathered from users, project partners, field surveys & code research.
- Perform and/or oversee system calculations, and sizing & selection of major system components. Anticipate, identify, & plan design work required to meet project deadlines.
- Effectively adapt to changing needs and priorities.
- Raise day-to-day and long-term staffing, budget, and quality issues with the appropriate people (PMs, Department Facilitator, DMT Leaders) in a constructive manner.
- Delegate and manage work, identify specific tasks, and balance work for Engineers and Designers in order to meet client demands and project deadlines.
- Provide appropriate level of oversight and review work to ensure established engineering principles are consistently used.
- Use effective written communication skills to prepare meeting notes, create and edit design specifications, respond to RFIs and author studies and reports.
- Responsible for the overall production and quality of project deliverables required within a specific discipline.
- Work to establish a positive working relationship with client and project partners based on competence, trust and respect.
- Advance the discipline practices, processes and tools. Consistently produce high quality documents and provide mentoring/guidance to others in order that they do the same.
- Actively share and present lessons learned and suggest continuous improvement initiatives within the discipline.
- In conjunction with the PM and engineering design team, develop and execute a QC plan for each phase of the project. Validate that appropriate QC efforts are conducted for the discipline in a timely manner.
- In conjunction with the PM, participate in discipline discussions in front of clients and code authorities.
- In conjunction with PM and Senior Project Engineer, act as primary point of contact with project partners and client on discipline design issues.
- Create and maintain an action list of open items and monitor progress in resolving issues.
- Work with Project Coordinator to monitor and ensure project decisions are appropriately documented and meeting notes are issued on a timely basis.
- Identify and participate in the resolution of interpersonal or project related internal issues that arise.
- Take professional and productive action to move toward an agreeable solution. Seek guidance as needed to ensure a positive outcome.
- Maintain an awareness of client satisfaction and alert PM of any concerns.
- Understand business and interpersonal dynamics of working with co-workers, clients and project partners, and respond appropriately seeking support as needed.
- Collaborate with the PM or Senior Project Engineer in the development of design budgets and schedules.
- Monitor fees, forecast work effort, design to budget, and communicate issues to PM.
- Engage in employee mentoring through project work for staff at all levels of the project.
- Travel to job sites to perform field verification and field surveys.
Qualifications: Required: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field plus 5 years of experience with the design of mechanical systems for commercial or residential buildings, including experience designing systems for laboratory and healthcare facilities and use of engineering design programs such as AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Trane Trace, or similar load calculation software. In addition, the following specific skills are required:
- 3 years of experience with building systems across disciplines including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
- 2 years of experience establishing design concepts and criteria, developing the Basis of Design, and evaluating system calculations and design options.
- 2 years of experience leading engineering design efforts and coordinating efforts and planning with internal and external team.
