The Role

Intern must be available to work full time (40 hours/week) during the 10-week program.

Program Dates: May 29 - August 7, 2026.

Location: This position is fully remote / work from home in the continental US.

Work Authorization: US Work Authorization required for this role.

Program eligibility is contingent on the candidate's commitment to the entire 10-week program. No exceptions will be made.

The Main Responsibilities

Lumen is hiring 2 Software Developer Interns to support two projects during our 10-week summer internship program.

Project 1 - will perform background availability checks and determine whether to automatically online/offline nodes based on environmental conditions and thresholds.
Project 2 - will provide a maintainable instance on nameserver software for both recursive caching "resolvers" and "authoritative" configurations. These services will need to control anycast configurations and may include managing two distinct software implementations (bind and unbound).

The interns will be responsible for the Oversight has additional function and bridge for Incognito, the IP and the DNS management application for Orange (TW Telcom), Blue Global Crossing, and Red (Level3) IP address space. Oversight has both an UI and also an API component period. Tasks and responsibilities may include:

  • Replicating existing NISWS operations and oversight
  • Upgrading spring boot to 3.5
  • Upgrading java to 21 or 17 instead of 8
  • Add DNS CRUD operations to Oversight
  • Investigate Oversight porting to CSTS instead of Incognito
What We Look For in a Candidate

Required qualification

  • Enrolled at a 4-year accredited college or university, rising senior level education status at the start of the internship.
  • Graduating August 2026 - May 2028
  • Preferred fields include butnot limited to: Computer Science, Information Systems or similar field

Proficiency and understanding of:

  • Java coding skills
  • Experience with JIRA

Preferred

  • Containerization tools (docker/kubernetes/linux namespaces/etc.)
  • Light (*nix) system admin
  • IP networking knowledge
  • File manipulation
  • Process management (spawning/monitoring/terminating/etc.)
  • Scripting (bash/perl/python/javascript/etc.)
  • Regular expressions

  • Knowledge of IPs and IP Management.

Compensation

Internship compensation ranges depend on each individual's level of education, geographic location, and experience/qualifications aligned to the role.

Hourly Based Pay Range:
Min: $ 31/hour
Max: $ 46/hour
