HJF is seeking a Veterinary Pathologist to provide oversight, including development of, coordination of, and successful maintenance, of a novel Military Working Dog (MWD) pathology database. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in assessing and monitoring the quality of the database's pathology information and will serve as an advisor to researchers seeking to establish research projects using the database. Reports directly to the Director of Veterinary Pathology.

The position will be in support of the John P. Murtha Cancer Center located at the Joint Pathology Center in Silver Spring, MD. The John P. Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed Bethesda is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position requires U.S. citizenship.

  • Responsible for working with IT/bioinformatics infrastructure team members to ensure the platform developed meets the needs and vision of this project.
  • Responsible for accurate entry of all pathology-related data into the biomedical informatics platform and datasheets, prepares reports for partners including the Joint Incentive Fund, the VA, and the Joint Pathology Center (JPC), and other DoD entities, as required.
  • Act as the veterinary science coordinator and be responsible for writing, maintaining, and following SOPs, overseeing required documentation, provide specific training, and providing veterinary support to studies as needed.
  • Supports the Director in maintaining full compliance of the Military Working Dog database with all applicable requirements of the DoD, the JPC, and other appropriate regulatory agencies (e.g. The Animal Resource Review Committee), and other stakeholders.
  • Maintains positive relationships with various allied partners and collaborators, including JPC pathologists, VA scientists, bioinformatics team, and IT, as well as other stakeholders such as Army Veterinary Services and DHA Veterinary Services.
  • Assists with the development and execution of new research protocols ensuring that all procedures are followed for regulatory compliance.
  • Participates in scientific committees and/or working groups of Veterinary Pathology and helps coordinate research projects using the MWD database with JPC staff and resident pathologists.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance or and participation in required training for role or presentations at national conferences.

Education and Experience



  • Doctoral Degree in DMV/VMD from an AVMA-accredited school. ACVP board certification.
  • Experience conducting veterinary and pathologic research studies.
  • Experience in Military Working Dog (MWD) medicine and pathology.
  • Minimum of 5+ years experience required. 10+ years of experience preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of veterinary medicine and the procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks.
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise in working with multiple organ sites.
  • Experience working with pathology databases.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret security clearance.


Work Environment



  • This position will take place in a remote setting.


Compensation



  • The annual salary/hourly pay range for this position is $125,000-$180,000. Actual salary/hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
