Job Description

A Brief Overview

Argo Group currently has a challenging opportunity for an Underwriting Technical Specialist supporting our Tax Liability line of business. The Tax Underwriter will be responsible for sourcing, evaluating and assessing of tax-related risks while exercising rigorous underwriting frameworks and processes to make conservative and prudent decisions on deployment of capital.

The role will work onsite (5 days per week) at our New York City office location.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the role are:

  • Source and analyze tax liability insurance submissions from retail brokers.
  • Maintain and exercise Argo's tax underwriting guidelines.
  • Produce memorandums and deal binders to document each bound policy, the associated covered tax position, and other critical details of the transaction.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions within tax insurance policies.
  • Assist in claims activity on tax policies.
  • Coordinate and effectively communicate with outside tax counsel, accounting firm and internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and internal processes.
  • Assist with risk summary reporting for submissions received as well as policies bound.
  • Uphold a culture of technical expertise, prudent tax insurance underwriting, innovation, collaboration, and continuous education and improvement.

Core qualifications and requirements for this position include:

  • Juris Doctorate or non-US equivalent required; LL.M. in Taxation preferred.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience required and/or an equivalent combination of education/experience (JD and LLM equivalent to four years of experience)
  • Minimum of 4 years of tax experience required
  • Significant experience with the tax insurance product.
  • Strong research and drafting skills required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
  • Strong judgment and decisions making skills with the big picture in mind.
  • Understands and appreciates the value of relationships and has a strong ability to connect and maintain relationships.
  • Strong time management, prioritization, and organizational skills; ability to be self-directed and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

The base salary range provided below is for hires in those geographic areas only and will be commensurate with candidate experience. Pay ranges for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location. In addition to base salary, all employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance as well as a generous benefits package.

  • New York City Pay Range: $204,500 - $260,200
