Columbia University Irving Medical Center - Department of Medicine

Columbia University Irving Medical Center invites outstanding candidates to apply for positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. These positions are based with leading research labs in cancer immunotherapy and technology development and are part of the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology and the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center.

We are seeking candidates with demonstrated excellence and future potential in the areas of gene editing, cell engineering, cancer genomics, and computational biology, who can lead a research program at the intersection of basic science, translational research, and clinical application. Successful candidates will demonstrate a record of significant research accomplishments and the potential to establish creative, independent research programs with a commitment to teaching and mentoring at the graduate, medical, and postdoctoral levels.

Research Focus Areas

1. Gene Editing & Cell Engineering

  • Development and application of advanced gene editing tools (e.g., CRISPR, base editing) in human and murine immune cells
  • Engineering of immune cells for therapeutic applications, including CAR-T and other cell therapies
  • Collaboration with the Columbia University Irving Medical Center's cell manufacturing facility for clinical translation

2. Functional Genomics & High-Throughput Screening

  • Massively parallel CRISPR-based perturbation screens
  • Functional characterization of disease-associated variants and variants enhancing therapeutic efficacy
  • Synthetic biology and model systems to dissect gene function in cancer and immune contexts

3. Cancer Genomics & Systems Medicine

  • Study of mutational processes, clonal evolution, chromosomal instability, and the tumor microenvironment
  • Integration of multi-omics datasets (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics) to uncover cancer mechanisms

4. Advanced Sequencing Technologies

  • Application and development of cutting-edge methods such as:

    • Single-cell RNA-seq and ATAC-seq
    • Spatial transcriptomics
    • Long-read sequencing
    • Whole-genome/exome sequencing (WGS/WES)

5. Computational Biology & AI

  • Development of predictive models of therapy response using machine learning/AI
  • Multi-modal data integration and quantitative systems biology approaches
  • Mathematical modeling to inform therapeutic strategies in precision oncology and immunotherapy

Columbia offers access to:

  • State-of-the-art core facilities for sequencing, cell engineering, and imaging
  • High-performance computing and data science support
  • Biobanking and patient-derived model systems
  • A rich and collaborative scientific community spanning basic, clinical, and translational domains
