Job Description

General Summary:

Vertex is seeking a talented individual to join our process chemistry group in Boston, MA. This role will support drug substance development programs at Vertex performing synthetic organic chemistry in the laboratory at a high level to design and execute syntheses of challenging compounds, troubleshoot a diverse range of chemistry issues and devise corrective solutions, and analyze complex data sets that leads to clear conclusion or recommendations to guide the synthetic decision. In addition, the individual is expected to work both independently and in a matrix team environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs, executes, and interprets synthetic organic experiments with a high degree of reliability, independence, and attention to detail
  • Proficient in application and utility of a variety of analytical tools (NMR, HPLC, LCMS, Biotage) to monitor and analyze experiments
  • Generate effective hypotheses to pursue synthesis goals and set new experimental direction
  • Multitask to execute multiple experiments in an efficient manner
  • Makes conceptual contributions to development activities and scientific strategies
  • Develops novel and creative solutions to overcome synthetic and manufacturing obstacles
  • Employs new principles and technologies to promote progress in the synthesis
  • Maintains accurate records of experiments and results in a laboratory notebook and authors reports as assigned
  • Draft, review and submit required documentation pertaining to the development and preparation of drug substances under cGMP environment

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiar with SOPs and GMPs and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and SOPs
  • Knowledge in writing and transferring developed technology to outside CROs and working with suppliers to solve chemical issues for compound delivery
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to exchange complex technical/scientific information with others in complex situations and to prepare presentations and reports as required
  • Ability to interact/communicate with various levels throughout the organization
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • PhD with 0 - 3 years relevant synthetic chemistry experience or
  • MS with 3+ years relevant synthetic chemistry experience or
  • BS with 6+ years relevant synthetic chemistry experience

Pay Range:

$98,900 - $148,400

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
