Campo Lab - Research Scientist Position
Job Summary University of Minnesota - Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine The Campo at the University of Minnesota, is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join our team. Our lab investigates how the innate immune system of the human lung responds to respiratory pathogens, with the goal of developing new therapies for infectious and inflammatory lung diseases. Our work is grounded in three interconnected pillars: Micro/Immunology - Using cutting-edge cellular, molecular, and microbiologic approaches to define how lung immune cells interact with pathogens. Community Engagement - Building long-term partnerships with local communities and health systems to ensure our research is relevant, ethical, and impactful. Bioinformatics - Applying advanced computational methods to analyze complex single-cell, genomic, and systems-level datasets.
This position directly supports University of Minnesota's mission "to seek new knowledge that can change how we all work and live" by producing high-quality, reproducible data, fostering scientific collaboration, and bridging the gap between discovery and application in human health.
Responsibilities Research (75%) Design and conduct independently experiments on respiratory pathogenesis and cellular immunology, including tissue culture, flow cytometry, CRISPR/Cas9, scRNAseq/ATACseq, and bacterial/mammalian cell culture. Analyze and interpret data, integrate results with bioinformatics pipelines, and present findings in lab meetings, manuscripts, and conferences. Collaborate with team members to design and refine experimental approaches. Operate routine lab equipment such as balances, pH meters, centrifuges, thermal cyclers, plate readers, microscopes etc. Record results manually and using image and analysis software. Maintain training and other regulatory records. Perform everyday tasks such as laboratory cleanup and replenishing supplies as needed. Manage hazardous and chemical waste.
Community and Administrative Engagement (15%) Assist with writing protocols, grant proposals, and manuscripts. Co-manage lab inventory, safety procedures, administrative records and regulatory compliance. Support and lead community engagement efforts tied to our research program, including outreach with local organizations and study participants.
Mentorship (10%) Train and supervise undergraduate interns and rotating graduate students. Contribute to a collaborative, respectful and inclusive lab culture.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications (Must be documented on all application materials) BA/BS in a related science plus at least two years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience to equal at least six years Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to write and follow protocols accurately. Computer literacy, including proficiency with Word and Excel. Exposure to laboratory techniques through coursework or internships. Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a team environment. Ability to design, conduct, and analyze experiments independently. Three or more years of relevant post-degree laboratory experience. Proven record of generating publication-quality data. Experience interacting with community members, volunteers, or study participants.
Preferred Qualifications Experience with mammalian and bacterial tissue culture, DNA/RNA extractions, flow cytometry, and single-cell sequencing workflows. Familiarity with molecular biology methods (PCR, cloning, western blotting, ELISA). Experience in human sample processing (blood or BALF), cryopreservation, and cell isolation. Basic programming/data analysis skills (R or similar). Interest in learning BSL-3 laboratory skills, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis research. Prior experience with lab management, inventory, and safety compliance. Supervisory experience or demonstrated ability to mentor students.

Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: Starting Salary for this position is $21.00 to $35.93 depending on education/qualifications/experience Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
