Description

The Director, Health & Safety role is a critical position that influences, supports and oversees occupational health and workplace safety performance within a functional area of the organization with a primary focus around supporting successful project delivery. This role leads and manages a team of H&S professionals and/or leaders focused on the implementation of H&S strategy and initiatives for functional areas and/or the organization, ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal standards, driving continuous improvement with incident prevention, and fostering a culture of safety excellence. The role assists functional area and operations leadership in supporting employees and teams with successful project delivery as well as the formation of and strategic planning to achieve H&S performance goals around incident prevention.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist leadership in the development and implementation of occupational health and workplace safety strategy, goals and objectives for functional area(s).
  • Support and monitor compliance within functional area and the organization with company and client policy and procedures as well as local, state, and federal standards.
  • Directly, or through H&S team members, facilitate (i.e. H&S plan review, subcontractor prequalification, training) and monitor (i.e. auditing) H&S aspects of project delivery within functional area. This includes partnering with leadership for related strategic planning and solutions development for identified issues or challenges as well as meeting changing client or regulatory requirements.
  • Promote and leverage, as applicable, current resources and tools (i.e. EHS management system) to increase engagement with H&S aspects of project delivery and overall workplace safety. This includes conducting routine data tracking, analysis, and reporting with the development of recommendations for and partnering with functional area leadership to promote recognition or solutions development for potential issues or challenges identified.
  • Work within established H&S processes, protocols and other expectations to facilitate and coach employees and project teams in understanding company policy as well as in building hazard identification and control development skills to support incident prevention within functional area. This includes building related support resources, conducting training sessions, and other similar actions in partnership with the Business Units and other stakeholders.
  • Advocate for H&S cultural growth within functional area through routine and intentional employee and/or team recognition.
  • Lead complex and/or high-risk incident, near miss or other H&S concern investigations and provide strategic recommendations for related corrective and preventative actions. This includes overseeing and supporting other incident, near miss or H&S concern events within functional area and related leadership engagement.
  • Lead and manage strategic initiatives to support the organization and functional area.
  • Lead and manage on-going aspects of company H&S program that may include but not be limited to H&S Policy development/maintenance, H&S Training Program, Employee Ergonomic Program, Work Observation Program, and other critical aspects of an effective H&S program in partnership with the H&S team, the Business Units and Legal.
  • Oversee timely and effective response to natural phenomena emergencies, incidents, near misses, or other escalated H&S concerns.
  • Lead, develop, and coach a high-performing team by setting clear expectations, providing feedback, and fostering a culture of engagement, growth, and accountability.
  • Oversee workload planning, performance management, and team operations to align resources with business objectives while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulations.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
  • Work collaboratively with the H&S leadership, and BU operations leaders to support company growth by leveraging H&S expertise.



Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of EHS regulations and industry best practices with demonstrated proficiency with respective interpretation for policy development and implementation.
  • Expert understanding of common hazards and minimum controls associated with water supply and wastewater (sanitary or process) treatment facilities (e.g., confined space entry, air monitoring, fall protection, etc.) and/or operations (e.g. investigation, remediation, O&M of treatment systems, etc.) that fall under the OSHA 1910 and 1926 standards.
  • Extensive business knowledge with comprehensive understanding of the organization and functional area.
  • Advanced leadership and communication skills with the ability to inspire and motivate team members as well as manage conflicts.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills based on organizational objectives and in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross functional groups to achieve a common goal.
  • Ability to learn and become proficient in a variety of digital applications and platforms that support health and safety efforts within the organization.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective training related to regulatory compliance requirements as well as BC H&S policies, procedures and best practices.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across the H&S community with the ability to have constructive discussion, where disagreement is possible but to be able to decisions and move them forward.


Experience:

  • Typically, a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience (environment, health and safety role) is required.


  • Experience managing individual(s). Management of a team of H&S professionals preferred.
  • Prior occupational health & workplace safety role experience in a large organizational setting preferred.
  • Experience with developing, managing, monitoring (i.e. auditing) and enforcing H&S protocols during field activity implementation on varied project types (e.g. municipal/industrial waste supply, wastewater (sanitary/process), remedial investigation and/or actions, construction and/or construction management, etc.). This includes exposure to and familiarity with prevention through design and high-risk activities such as confined space entry, lifting operations, excavations, hot work, chemical exposure, etc.
  • Experience with developing, managing, and maintaining Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) management systems that include, but may not be limited to, Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) type system that both facilitate and maintain related records of varying aspects of a H&S program.


Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in the area of Health and Safety (Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, etc.) or in similar field (Chemistry, Engineering, Construction Management, etc.).
  • Relevant Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification or ability to obtain (e.g., OHST, CHST, ASP, GSP, CSP), Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) certification or ability to obtain (e.g. CHMM) or Board or Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC) certification or ability to obtain (e.g. CIH) required.


Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A:

Salary $145,000 - $199,000

Location B:

Salary $160,000 - $219,000

Location C:

Salary $174,000 - $238,000
