Job Summary
#CA-DS Patient Biller IV is responsible for assisting unit Supervisors in Day-to-day operations. Manage assigned work ques in Epic. Assist in training of new staff and existing staff on the system. PBIV also provides operational management assistance to the department supervisors. - High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience/training
- Follow-up commercial payer billing experience. History of successful payor denial appeals.
- Experience with commercial, government, and third-party payors. Including current regulations, time limitations and procedures.
- Good verbal and written communication skills. Documents and reports clearly and concisely. Conveys instructions, directions and information appropriately. Ability to write effectively and to compose internal and external correspondence.
- Ability to analyze and interpret various operational reports to identify problematic trends, and other performance barriers.
- Tact and diplomacy skills to constructively assist with training and coaching new and existing staff to improve staff performance.
- Ability to analyze and interpret various types of Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and Remittance Advice (RA).
- Analytical skills to assess account balances and make determinations/decisions on further action.
- General knowledge of medical terminology to correlate reports to actual charges and to determine the appropriateness of denials.
- General knowledge of credit and collection practices.
- Ability to type for efficient entry of billing information and charges into the billing computer system and to prepare various forms of correspondence.
- Ability to read and comprehend department policy, as well as internal and external correspondence.
- Written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively convey complex information in a clear and concise manner in both internal and external correspondence.
- Communication skills to appropriately respond in a timely manner to account inquiries, both in person and via email to internal and external customers.
- Problem-solving and judgment skills to research, analyze, and resolve or recommend alternatives to problematic situations.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area
- Experience training staff on payer policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Prior professional medical billing experience a plus.
- Knowledge of EPIC PB Revenue cycle and related systems used for commercial billing and follow-up, ie., EPIC, OnBase, Outlook, Ecotime, Microsoft Excel, and Word.
- Knowledge of medical billing/reimbursement requirements and procedures including government programs, private third-party insurance, and private individuals. Knowledge of Medi-Cal, Medicare, and Commercial Plans is required.
- Knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Insurance Classification of Disease (ICD-10) and NCCI Edit policies related to medical billing.

Department Overview Professional Billing Group, a part of the UCDHS Financial Services Division, provides billing and collection services for approximately 825 UCD Health System Facility Physicians.
