Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Engineering Manager.

  • Define driverless qualification strategy and collaborate with Perception Software Engineers on hillclimbing evaluation strategy
  • Discover problem clusters and determine the priority of improvements, or provide justification for why things don't need to be fixed
  • Identify and advocate for the right-sized solutions to complex system problems
  • Implementation and execution of tests, determining test coverage and realism needed

You have:

  • BS degree in a technical field, such as Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Robotics, Math, Physics, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience, including a background in aerospace, robotics or automotive industries, with depth of experience in at least one technical area (e.g. motion control, software, sensing, etc.)
  • Experience with systems engineering fundamentals across the full product lifecycle, from system architecture through transition into operations, especially for complex systems with safety-critical hardware and software components
  • Experience using Python, SQL, R, MATLAB, or similar for data analysis and related script development
  • Strong test planning, execution, troubleshooting and data analysis skills, at the subsystem and full system level
  • Experience working in complex cross functional environments while developing and executing in-depth analytics to obtain actionable insights & solution prioritization

We prefer:

  • 15 years of experience
  • Autonomous Vehicle industry experience
  • Although not the focus of this role, some SW development experience and a good understanding of the software development processes is helpful
  • Good understanding of perception models and how they work with larger AV systems
  • Experience with robotic sensor and perception systems
