Focus: The Global Material Science SME is responsible for overseeing and enhancing the reliability of plant operations through institutionalizing key reliability fundamentals across the enterprise. This role provides material science and metallurgy technology consultation, standard setting, expertise, training, and leadership, ensuring the safety, efficiency, and longevity of our assets while driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Global Material Science SME Essential Responsibilities:

  • Partner with Olin's Technical Center, standardizing efforts for the material science discipline related practices, most effective technology, and engineering tools and provide support (directly/indirectly) updating Material of Construction/Corrosion Control documents.
  • Train and develop Engineers and Inspectors in the theory, selection, and life cycle management of assets from the material science standpoint. Additionally, train and mentor these individuals in various reliability fundamentals that provide positive impact to the life cycle cost of all assets and their material of construction.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting support for complex or difficult metallurgy related plant issues and at times participate in RCI's (Root Cause Investigations), plant technical reviews, and audits.
  • Work with operations, maintenance, projects, and the various reliability networks and disciplines to properly apply material standards and provide technical approvals as required.
  • Partner with the site fixed equipment inspection teams analyzing results to identify trends and potential internal/external corrosion risks, making recommendations for corrective actions based on findings.
  • Work with site inspection teams to assess and optimize procedures, inspection plans (e.g. RBI), and placement of corrosion monitoring devices to ensure effectiveness, etc.
  • Audit inspection data within document control systems to ensure adherence to company policy and procedures.
  • Participate as a project member in capital and expense project design reviews and provide technical guidance on the selection of appropriate materials of construction, installation methods, and detailed specifications.

Global Material Science SME Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree* in Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering or Corrosion Engineering; Master's Degree* preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of engineering experience with at least 5 years of on-site chemical plant or refinery support. A mix of large and small site support as a Materials Engineer preferred.
  • Professional registration or certification such as PE, P. Eng., EUR ING, or CEng in Metallurgical Engineering or related engineering field required. AMPP Corrosion Specialist certification or equivalent required.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory and field corrosion testing, including electrochemical techniques, with proficiency in key Materials Engineering disciplines such as failure analysis, inspection, non-destructive evaluation (NDE), protective coatings and linings (including glass linings), cathodic protection, welding and fabrication, process cleaning, insulation, and refractory systems.
  • Proficiency in reliability fundamentals such as PM/PdM, RCA, FMEA, SIC, Maintenance Work Process, and effective mechanical integrity systems that support asset life cycle management.
  • Familiarity with owner and industry standards and practices related to materials of construction (e.g., NACE, API, ASME), with active engagement in professional technical organizations such as ASME, API, and PIP.
  • Proven leadership within site and business discipline networks, with strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively lead meetings and deliver professional presentations.
  • Ability to work independently on complex projects. Manages conflicts and provides resolution using a combination of technical skills, leadership, teamwork, and people management skills.
  • Proficiency with PCMS, SAP, and Microsoft Office software required.
