The BNSF Railway Engineering Department is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This crucial role involves applying advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. This is a full-time job thatmust be located within the Montana Division

Travel is required approximately 90%.

Key responsibilities may include:

This position is responsible for supervising the maintenance and repair of Roadway Equipment and Roadway Equipment forces, including the following:

  • Supervising workforce necessary for the repair and maintenance of roadway equipment
  • Planning daily/weekly/monthly manpower needs and assignments to ensure division and production gang needs are met
  • Maintaining all assigned roadway equipment to a safe and reliable condition, to include meeting FRA Standards.
  • Operate within authorized budget, both monthly and Year to Date.
  • Implementing all safety, quality, technical, and HAZCOM training for assigned mechanics
  • Supervising the preventive and predictive maintenance program
  • Organizing and implementing equipment consists
  • Addressing all equipment safety and ergonomic concerns
  • Assisting mechanics in troubleshooting of equipment problems
  • Defining and developing new methods, components and work processes to improve the safety, quality and productivity of roadway equipment consists
  • Reviewing and approving all local purchases, material requisitions, procards and daily time of assigned employees

Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with heavy equipment repair and maintenance
  • Working knowledge of Maintenance of Way track standards
  • Preferred knowledge and understanding of the BNSF fleet of equipment
  • Understanding of rules, procedures, and applicable railroad union agreements
  • Must be self-directed, motivated and possess good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage and solve problems during times of crisis and high stress
  • Ability to multi task and prioritize equipment repairs and manpower needs.
  • Ability to recognize employee abilities and assign job tasks accordingly
  • Willingness and ability to travel to various locations in a geographic region and remain on site for extended periods, sometimes days or weeks at a time
  • Ability to work "on call" and respond to emergencies at any time
  • Safety commitment and ability to support, lead and contribute to a strong safety process
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet)
  • Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain/surfaces, including occasionally climbing on and off equipment
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access)
  • Ability to work on/around heavy and moving machinery and in conditions that include loud noise and fumes

Preferred Qualification:

  • 5-10 years of experience in the maintenance, repair and management of heavy equipment fleet or college alternative
  • Bachelors degree in an Engineering based curriculum preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of IAM and MOW agreements
  • Knowledge of company operations relative to the Engineering Department
