What to Expect

Consider before submitting an application:

This position is expected to start around January 2026 and continue through the Winter/Spring term (ending approximately May 2026) or continuing into Summer 2026 if available and there is an opportunity to do so. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships. Our internship program is for students who are actively enrolled in an academic program. Recent graduates seeking employment after graduation and not returning to school should apply for full-time positions, not internships.

International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

We provide an experience that allows the intern to experience life at Tesla by including them in projects that are critical to their team's success.

About the Team

This Firmware Tools team builds critical tools and infrastructure that enables Tesla to rapidly develop software with precision and agility. Our goal is to increase engineering effectiveness, reduce the possibilities for human error and improve development efficiency. This team's core technology is an infrastructure that describes how our complex vehicle control systems communicate with each other and augments the engineering process with analysis, visualization and code generation tools.

As a member of this team, you will shape the landscape for how Tesla designs future systems. This is a software development role that requires someone who likes to think about the big picture. You will work with component owners to understand their use cases so you can develop new technologies to act as a force multiplier for their productivity. Our software is heavily utilized throughout the entire engineering organization. You will excel on this team if you thrive on autonomy and enjoy the freedom (and responsibility) of driving your own projects from concept to completion.


What You'll Do
  • Interface with key leaders of components spanning all Tesla products including energy, autopilot, powertrain and vehicle controls
  • Work with component owners to understand their use cases to develop new technologies to act as a force multiplier for their productivity
  • Identify opportunities to improve organizational efficiency and reduce cost
  • Derive a scalable design from abstract requirements
  • Design, develop and deploy tools and services to augment the development process
  • Scale your solution

What You'll Bring
  • Currently working towards a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field of study with a graduation date between 2026 - 2027
  • Python experience
  • Willing and excited to learn Haskell
  • Experience in data structures and algorithms
  • A demonstrated understand of system design principles including scalability and maintainability
  • The ability to write clean, well-documented code and debug for performance and reliability
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment on several different simultaneous projects

    Expected Compensation
    $36.06 - $56.13/hour + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
