Sr. Software Engineer, Data Platform, Cell Software

Tesla Motors, Inc.
paid holidays, flex time, 401(k)
United States, Texas, Austin

What to Expect

Tesla is re-thinking how batteries are made from the ground up. We're designing new factories, new equipment, new processes, and new software to rapidly scale battery manufacturing globally. The primary bottleneck to Tesla's future expansion (and the transition to sustainable transport and energy storage) is our ability to produce and procure batteries - that's why we're innovating in-house, with our collection of world-class engineers, to redefine the industry. Software, data, and automation all play a huge part in this strategy.

We've built software from scratch with a nimble and high performing team to meet the specific needs of Tesla's rapid battery manufacturing scale up. This software tracks every component of the cell manufacturing process and acts as the brain of the entire cell factory. It's key to ensuring batteries are made safely end-to-end and for understanding how to improve processes.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer that will help us to build the global data platform and analytics tools for measuring factory performance. You will help build data infrastructure that will handle millions of events per second, and you will implement datasets and data pipelines that drive critical decisions around manufacturing and product quality. You will also work to expand current the current systems to handle data from other Tesla factories located around the world, building a data platform that enables unified analysis of material across the supply chain, from raw material to vehicle.

What You'll Do
  • Build data and backend infrastructure that forms the global data platform for the Tesla manufacturing team
  • Build streaming data pipelines that process billions of observations per day in real-time
  • Design datasets that manipulate and aggregate datasets into a useful format for downstream software applications and data consumers
  • Build robust validation and testing tools to ensure data quality and software reliability across globally distributed software systems
  • Support data scientists and software engineers in using a centralized data platform to build interactive visualizations, generate reports, and conduct statistical analyses
  • Work closely with manufacturing engineers to integrate new datasets into the data platform and ensure all data reporting needs can be met

What You'll Bring
  • Strong programming experience with at least one of Python, Java, Scala, or Go
  • Experience working with databases, data warehouses, or distributed data systems is required
  • Experience with Spark, Kafka, Flink, or another data processing engine is required
  • Nice to have: Experience with ClickHouse, Airflow, Iceberg, Hudi, Delta Lake, Databricks
  • Nice to have: Experience with full-stack development using Javascript, Typescript, React, FastAPI, or Flask
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to quickly translate needs into data analysis problems and effectively communicate learnings
