Summary of Job Duties:The Phlebotomist supports all sections of the Clinical Outpatient Laboratory through proper phlebotomy techniques as well as proper specimen accessioning, processing and related activities, while providing Patient Family Center Care. Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School, GED or formal educational equivalent
  • Two (2) years experience as phlebotomist required
  • Excellent communication skills, basic computer skills, strong work ethics and accountability
  • Ability to Follow Oral Instruction, Read and Write

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an ambulatory care setting

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Performs venipunctures, fingersticks, and heelsticks (especially for prenatal and OB/GYN patients).

  • Ensures minimal discomfort and proper technique to avoid complications.

  • Follows strict protocols to verify patient identity using two identifiers.

  • Confirms test orders with patient records to ensure specimen accuracy and patient safety.

  • Ensures specimen integrity by using correct collection containers and preservatives.

  • Interacts professionally with women of all ages, including pregnant and postpartum patients.

  • Adheres strictly to infection control procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Sanitizes work area and equipment between patients to prevent cross-contamination.

  • Documents collection times, specimen types, and any patient reactions in electronic medical records (Epic or similar).

  • Maintains compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality standards.

  • Works closely with nurses, OB/GYN physicians, and lab personnel to prioritize STAT or time-sensitive draws.

  • Communicates any unusual findings or complications promptly.

  • Performs daily equipment checks and participate in quality assurance programs.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
