The School of Arts and Sciences ( SAS) is the largest academic unit at Rutgers University and the center of the undergraduate experience on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus and is comprised of 41 academic departments spanning the liberal arts. SAS offers more than 100 majors and minors across the life sciences, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and mathematical and physical sciences with research centers and institutes across the school. Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor for the School of Arts and Sciences ( SAS). Reporting to the area Directors within the SAS Office of Advising and Academic Services ( OAAS), the Academic Advising Counselors will serve as academic and retention advisors, serving students pursuing all SAS degrees, as well as those not yet declared or considering a change.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Contributes to the comprehensive system of student support that addresses the academic and personal needs of SAS undergraduates.
  • Advises SAS students within the University and make appropriate referrals when necessary.
  • Incumbents will work in close collaboration with the SAS Assistant Deans for Advising and Academic Services and will provide academic and career advising in a comprehensive and collaborative fashion.
  • Reviews and evaluates students' records in order to assist with course selection and planning, consideration of scholarly options, and preparation for their academic and post-graduate careers.
  • Develops detailed, timely graduation plans emphasizing goal setting and leadership skills aimed at meeting each students individualized objectives and culminating in college success and on-time graduation.
  • Serves as liaisons with academic departments and programs.
  • Supports the School of Arts and Sciences by participating in all student advising functions, such as staffing the Student Advising Centers with walk-in and scheduled appointments, attending the first year and transfer student recruitment and registration programs, participating in student outreach and training programs, and staffing various school functions such as Open House and Convocation.
  • Assists SAS students in attaining their educational and career goals in a timely manner.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in an Arts and Sciences field, and two years postgraduate relevant experience in higher education academic counseling/advisement; or equivalent experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of new and continuing student populations and programs, student development and counseling theories and applications.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have experience working with students at academic risk, first generation college students, students with disabilities, and international students.
  • Must have demonstrated ability and skills in addressing the issues and factors impacting today's college student populations.
  • Strong commitment to student support and success and a commitment to university and student service.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and highly developed oral and written communication skills.
  • The candidate must have expert electronic and digital skills including enthusiasm to function in a paperless environment.
  • The ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • The candidate must collaborate with all levels of employees within the organization and express a preference for working as part of team.
  • Adherence to established policies, schedules and office procedures and demonstrated organizational ability with strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a full-time position as a higher education student advisor or counselor.
Equipment Utilized

  • Fluency with the Microsoft Office suite of applications, including the use of mail merges.
  • Ability to work with or quickly learn student information databases and systems.
  • In addition, student records systems, learning management systems, an advising note-taking platform, a degree audit system, as well as multiple proprietary and home-grown databases are consulted daily.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The counselors are expected to be flexible with their schedules, in order to participate in programs scheduled in the evenings and on weekends.


Special Conditions

  • Works at occasional evening and/or weekend programs and activities.
  • Multiple vacancies.
  • Incumbents may be asked to work in offices located on multiple campuses and must be willing and able to travel between the four New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses on any given day or week.
