The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a civil engineer to join our dynamic civil engineering team. In this hybrid role, you will work with multidisciplinary project teams across the US and Canada on civil engineering and related technical assignments, such as preparing design drawings and specifications, completing engineering calculations and analyses, writing technical reports, developing details of designs, and preparing cost estimates and bid packages. This position generally aligns with dams, landfills, and landslides, with the option of branching into other sectors such as mining, oil and gas, power delivery, and renewables.

The ideal candidate for this position has prior experience providing exceptional client service for internal and external project teams. They are willing to work cooperatively in a project team environment that encourages self-initiative. They possess exceptional organizational skills, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and have a flexible work style to meet deadlines and client needs.

Your impact - key responsibilities
  • Project support: support and manage civil engineering projects, including work on dams, levees, canals, landfills, landslides, renewables, and other general earthwork and grading. Develop scopes of work, budgets, and timelines according to client specifications and needs.

  • Technical oversight: oversee site characterization, evaluation of alternatives, design development, and construction management. Responsibilities may involve hydrologic and hydraulic calculations, report writing, large report production, construction cost estimating, construction observation, and facility inspections. Prepare construction documents, site evaluations, feasibility studies, road design, grading, and stormwater design. Prepare technical reports and complete other tasks

  • Compliance and permitting: help ensure projects meet local, state, and federal regulations. Manage permits and environmental assessments.

  • Risk management: Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies, handling unexpected issues during design and construction efficiently and in a timely manner.

About the opportunity
  • Compensation: anticipated range of $85,000-100,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt/salaried under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Work location: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Fort Collins, Colorado, office.

  • Travel expectation: up to 10 percent domestic fieldwork is anticipated, with an average of one to five days of continuous job site presence. Actual travel may vary based on specific projects.

  • Work environment: ability to work in an office environment and ability to work in locations that include rough terrain typical of construction/manufacturing/rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies
  • Education: bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related area.

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in civil engineering design and analysis related to site layout, grading and drainage, mass earthwork, etc. Familiarity with federal and state procurement processes. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability and willingness to conduct fieldwork independently or with a team, either locally or out of town, when needed.

  • Software: proficiency with Microsoft Office products. Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other CAD-based civil design software. Experience with GIS-based software preferred. Experience using Primavera preferred.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • 7 or more years of related work experience.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain.

  • Experience preparing plans and specifications, analyzing alternatives, and developing quantity takeoffs and cost estimates.

  • Project management experience.

  • Construction administration experience, such as reviewing and responding to payment applications, submittals, claims, and interpreting plans, specifications, and bid documents.

  • Experience drafting PowerPoint presentations, memos, and report text and figures.
